Abstract A high resolution (5 lines/mm) large area(l4inch) FLCD has been developed for use in various personal and office equipment like computer, workstation, wordprocessor and desktop-publishing systems etc. The 1280 × 1120 pixel screen is simply multiplexed, thus working at a 1/1120 duty rate.

Abstract Two important features in high-duty FLC matrix driving, bistability and switchablity, are studied. Bistability is destroyed in certain kinds of alignment because of the ionic impurity accumulation at liquid crystal surfaces. Control of surface molecular configuration is crucial to avoid this monostablization. Unswitchable alignment appears if the liquid crystal has a large spontaneous polarization. Relation between this anomaly and electrical properties of subutrates is also discussed. The possibility of high-duty multiplex driving has been confirmed in display panels with 400 scanning lines.

Abstract FLC materials which realize stable uniform state and small temperature dependence of response have been developed. The FLC materials have characteristics good enough to achieve large size and high contrast displays for practical use.

Abstract A 15-inch diagonal size digital full color FLCD has been developed. It has 1024 × 768 pixels and each pixels is divided into 12 sub-pixels in order to realize 4,096 colors/pixel with the optical center of illumination maintained. Additionally using the so-called, dither techniques, it has demonstrated that the 16 million different hues are achievable even with the bistable FLC.
