A distributed data driven architecture for operations support systems

Kazuyoshi Akiyama; Toshiya Watanabe; Kazuhide Takahashi; Nobuhiro Tanigawa

This paper proposes a distributed data driven architecture (D3A), devised for application to an operations support system (OSS). By applying this architecture to an OSS, it is possible to reduce OSS hardware and middleware costs, and to change OSS application programs rapidly and flexibly. To assure alarm reception processing performance at low cost, D3A is comprised of a lot of IA servers. With D3A, OSS application programs are divided into a lot of elements similar to UNIX processes. These elements are called processing elements (PEs). A PE is mounted on each IA server. Data that represents the execution sequence and execution condition of PEs is called processing configuration data (PCD). The PCD moves about among IA servers comprising an OSS. The PCD driver (PCDD) is a function to analyze the PCD, and determines the PE to be executed next and controls the route of the PCD. A commercial OSS is being developed by using D3A and will start running in June 2004.

Problems and feasibility consideration of service-forcused monitoring OSS over mobile networks

Hideki Toube; Shinya Aoyama; Hiroki Muramatsu; Osamu Nakamura; Kazuhide Takahashi

The usage of the mobile phone becomes more diversified, as smart phone users increase and data transmission speed becomes faster by LTE. It is difficult to monitor the network service and maintain stable service quality with the NE-focused monitoring OSS (Operation Support System). In this paper, we show the concept and required functions of the service quality monitoring for mobile networks. Additionally, we propose the implementation of the service quality monitoring OSS to achieve the efficient O&M.

Containment of development cost associated with new services is important issue for telecom operators. Our OSS products have web front end. We require the regression testing for existing functions with new function addition development of OSS. Generally, the test items for regression testing do not change significantly at every development. In this paper, we propose the automated program test including the regression testing using web browser, and we show the cost efficiency of developing OSS.

The proposal of geographically distributed OSS against a great earthquake — A study on macroscale disaster recovery

As Great East Japan Earthquake occurred at 11 March 2011 suffered a heavy loss, Japan is one of the most risky country stroke by an earthquake. Therefore, it is a social mission for enterprises in Japan, especially for telecommunication careers like us, to establish disaster recovery plan against a great earthquake. One way to achieve disaster recovery is locating a backup system geographically away from primary system. Authors have invented D3A (Distributed Data Driven Architecture) that makes thousands of small IA servers cooperated and derives high-performance. We have introduced the technology in commercial large-scale OSS (Operation Support System) to maintain tens of thousands of NE (Network Element) which constitute our telecommunication network. We have already possessed a backup system of the OSS for disaster recovery purpose. However, the backup system leads to great rise in TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) since it also consists of more than 1,000 machines. In this paper, we discuss about an autonomously continuous distributed disaster recovery system that is made up by several locations and every location is considered as primary system equivalently, and outage of one location does not impact on overall service of the system.

The proposal of service delivery platform built on distributed data driven architecture

Jianfeng Zhang; Yuki Kishikawa; Kentaro Fujii; Yousuke Kouno; Takayuki Nakamura; Kazuhide Takahashi

SDP (Service Delivery Platform) is a recommended system platform for NGN (Next Generation Network) that is expected to resolve two common system running problems: one is functional aspects such as high availability and providing effective maintenance methods, the other is cost aspects such as simplifying development method of a service. However, SDP is still on the way to be standardized, and its architecture has two problems: the congestion of service requests and flexibility of enabler, a service component of SDP. This paper explains how to build a SDP by adopting Distributed Data Driven Architecture and how our system resolves the problems by evaluating the prototype.

The Best Practice and Evaluation of Processes to Develop OSSs Using XML-Based Interfaces

Yuki Kishikawa; Daisuke Fujishima; Hironao Tamura; Kazuhide Takahashi; Shoichi Hirata

We propose the best practice of improving OSS development processes by modifying the conventional waterfall model. This method is based on the interfaces between OSSs and NEs expressed by XML, which enables us to reduce the cost of developing OSSs and shorten their development period even if new specifications are added. For further efficiency, users themselves could implement their own specifications. This could be regarded as a kind of Software as a Service (SaaS) that has lately been attracting more attention in many fields. The proportion of the scale to develop OSSs using XML to the whole scale was consequently 80-90%, and the development scale of XML-coding at a certain periodical development was 5% of the entire development scale of XML-coding in this system. This shows that we succeeded in drastically improving the efficiency of developing OSSs.
