Synthesis and morphological studies of polyisoprene-block-polystyrene-block-poly(vinyl methyl ether) triblock terpolymer

Abstract The triblock terpolymer (PI-b-PS-b-PVME) consisting of polyisoprene (PI), polystyrene (PS) and poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) was synthesized by coupling reaction between living PI-b-PS anion and end-chlorinated PVME prepared via living cationic polymerization. This polymer is an amphiphilic block polymer and unique in a sense that it exhibits complex phase behavior because PS and PVME have a lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-type phase diagram while PI and PS (or PVME) have an UCST-type phase diagram. This unique architecture would result in a step-wise microphase separation to form a three-phase microdomain structure. It was observed by transmission electron microscopy with ultrathin sections that the toluene-cast film of PI-b-PS-b-PVME has a two-phase lamellar structure consisting of PI microdomains and mixed PS/PVME microdomains. Applying a drop of water onto the ultrathin sections induced further microphase separation between PS and PVME within the lamellar microdomains resulting in the three-phase structure. Water is a selective solvent for PVME and might have lowered the order–disorder temperature between PS and PVME. This step-wise microphase separation may be a new technique to control microphase-separated structures in triblock terpolymers.

中性子 とX線 の相補性 と優位性について,本 稿では特にその相補性に注 目し,小 角中性子散乱 (SANS)と 小角X線 散乱(SAXS)と を組み合わせ た,3成 分 トリブロック共重合体の相転移現象並 びに構造形成過程の解析手法について紹介する. 異種高分子A,Bを 末端同士で連結させたA-B ジブロック共重合体は,熱 平衡状態において,分 子 レベルで均一に混合 した無秩序状態と,高 分子 の広が り程度のサイズ(ナ ノメー トルスケール) の周期構造 を有する秩序状態(ミ クロ相分離構 造)の いずれかをとり,温 度変化 に伴う秩序一無 秩序状態間の転移(ミ クロ相転移)を 熱可逆的に 起こすことが可能である(図1). ミクロ相分離構 造は,構 成高分子A,Bの 組成 比によってその形状が決まり,組 成比に応じ,球 状,シ リンダー状,交 互ラメラ構造をとることが 一般的に知られている(図2(a))が ,以 上のよう なナノ周期構造は,ブ ロック共重合体が,無 秩序 状態か ら自己組織化することによ り形成される点 が興味深い.ナ ノマテリアルの作製という観点か ら見れば,ト ップダウン方式が中心となって研究 が進め られてきた現状に一石を投じるものであり, ボ トムアップ方式による自己組織化を利用したナ ノマテリアルの作製は,省 エネルギー,環 境保護 の視点からも非常に重要である. A-Bジ ブロック共重合体の相転移並びに構造形 成過程の追跡には,温 度(圧力)変化過程における, 相転移のその場観察が必要である.ブ ロック共重 合体の相転移のその場観察が可能な実験法として は,散 乱法が最も一般的で,か つ,効 果的であり, 非常に多 くの成果がSANS,SAXS測 定により挙
