The Environment and Eating Habits of the Girls in the Junior and Senior High Schools

The environment, eating habits and physical conditions of 397 girls of the junior and senior high schools of Otsuma Womans University were surveyed during the period from May to June, 1978, ( 1 ) Physique: The average height and body weight of the junior high school girls were 155.0 cm and 46.7 kg, and of the senior high school girls, 157.2 cm and 50.3 kg. ( 2 ) Physical conditions: Eighty five % of all subjects were healthy, however, 28% of the junior high school students and 44% of the senior high school students complained of tiredness. ( 3 ) Nutritional intake: The energy intake of both schoolgirls was 1,700 kcal on an average and the protein intake 65 g. The percentage of the fat energy to the total energy was over 30%. The intake of animal fat was greater than that of vegetable fat. The average calcium and iron intakes were low, that is, 1/2 and 3/4 of nutritional requirements for them respectively. ( 4 ) Eating habits: They had more rice as staple food than bread. Although the sufficient amount of meat was consumed, the consumption of the green and yellow vegetables or milk was considerably insufficient. ( 5 ) Meals: Most of the students had breakfast, but the food quality was poor. The percentage of those who had lunch was 73% in the junior high school students, and 57% in the senior high school ones.
