Approach for reducing the Rayleigh scattering loss in optical fibers

Kazuya Saito; M. Yamaguchi; Akira J. Ikushima; Kazumasa Ohsono; Y. Kurosawa

Structural relaxations in fiber cores and claddings with various F concentrations were investigated. It was found that structural relaxation in the core is strongly affected by that in the cladding. This effect leads to an approach to control structural relaxation in fiber core for reducing the Rayleigh scattering loss in optical fibers. The advantage of this approach is to avoid increase of the Rayleigh scattering due to concentration fluctuation.

Hole-walled multi-core fibers (HW-MCFs) are proposed to reduce the crosstalk with arrayed holes walling. We have fabricated a HW-MCF with an effective area larger than 130 μm2 and crosstalk of less than -30 dB/100 km.

To realize easy field installation of connectors for holey fiber, we developed a novel mechanical splicing technique that utilizes a curing-type material for refractive-index matching instead of conventional liquid-type materials.

Simply-Structured Optical Terminators using Adhesive Polymer for Fiber Contact

Masao Tachikura; Masaya Wakasa; Tomoyuki Nishio; Kanako Suzuki; Yoshihisa Kato; Kazumasa Ohsono; Nobuhiro Hashimoto; Tomoki Furue

We have investigated a simple structure for optical terminators. By tuning the refractive index of an adhesive polymer for fiber end contact, high return losses over 50 dB with SPC connectors have been obtained.
