The study of Wargames based on HLA

Chunguang Peng; Baohong Liu; Kedi Huang

Wargaming, as an important type of warfare model or simulation, is used to revolve the interplay of human decisions and the following events affected. In order to reuse the existed technologies and resources, a new approach of designing wargames based on HLA is presented. The wargame elements consist of the system structure, maps, Time Management, umpires and warfare units. Furthermore, a prototype system is portrayed to illustrate how to design these elements. By linking wargaming with lessons of exercises, mathematical analyses, history and current operational experience, decision-makers could gain more balanced understanding of the reality of modern warfare.

Execution management of the BOM-based simulation system

Xiaocheng Liu; Bin Chen; Ke Zhang; Kedi Huang

The concept of Base Object Model (BOM) which enhances the interoperability and reusability of federates has resolved the problem of ineffective utilization of federates during the process of federation development. However, it does not refer to the control and organization on a simulation execution. It is laborious and time-consuming if we organize a BOM-based simulation execution manually. Since the Simulation Experiment Management System (SEMS) was introduced into the simulation system, all the simulation experiments could be accomplished automatically by computer instead of the previous manual operation. Meanwhile, the consumption of organization on simulation experiment has been deduced significantly. SEMS greatly increases the efficiency of development of a simulation system based BOM component due to its efficacious control on the software, federation, federates and simulation data. SEMS plays a crucial role in the field of simulation system development. In this paper, we mainly describe the features of federate development based on the BOM component and the design of the SEMS.

Applying BOM-based simulation model components to rapidly compose simulations and simulation environments

Jianxing Gong; Bin Chen; Jian Huang; Jianguo Hao; Kedi Huang

BOMs (Base Object Models) supported by SISO (Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization) are intended to provide a key mechanism in facilitating interoperability, reuse, and composability and support and promote reuse of simulation components and agile, rapid, and efficient development and maintenance of models. We examine how pattern components, supported by IF BOM (interface BOMs) and how behavior components, supported by the ECAP BOM (encapsulated BOMs), can be used to enable simulation model components based on BOM composability at design time and dynamically at run-time. Then, we give a method to rapidly compose simulations and simulation environments by applying simulation model components. Specially, we use IF BOMs as windows to filter data, which is dependent on the publishing and subscribing capability of conceptual entities among simulation model components, to enable simulation model components low coupling and high aggregation so that simulation components are not necessary for each other to know the needed inner behavior required of a conceptual entity. At last, we explore a BOM-based simulation engine, which auto-loads the desired simulation model components to rapidly compose simulations and simulation environments.

Design of impulse generation circuit for ultra-wideband range sensor testing system

Quanmin Wang; Gang Guo; Chuncai Wang; Kedi Huang

Ultra-Wideband (UWB) range sensor testing system is an efficient way of testing UWB range sensors. The circuit for UWB impulse generation is one key element of the system. Current impulse generators are mainly designed for Gaussian pulse or Gaussian monocycle, which cannot be used in the testing system directly. Based on sphere target assumption, this paper presents a circuit that can generates second order Gaussian impulse to simulate sensor target return signals for sensor testing, using step recovery diode and UWB filter co-design. Parameters of SRD circuit and UWB filter are determined by simulation. According to simulation results, an impulse circuit is fabricated and measured. The measurement results coincide with theoretical second order Gaussian signal, which means that the presented method is feasible for UWB range sensor testing system.

Research on flexibly extensible simulation system framework

Jianxing Gong; Jian Huang; Jianguo Hao; Kedi Huang

With the rapid advance of component-based technology in software engineering, component-based software has been widely used to develop highly modular simulation environments. The integration of component-based technology with M&S (modeling and simulation) environments gives the latter powerful capability and greatly supports reusability of components and interoperability of simulation environments. BOMs (base object models) supported by SISO (Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization) are intended to provide a key mechanism in facilitating interoperability, reusability, and composability and support and promote reuse of simulation model components and agile, rapid, and efficient development and maintenance of models. BOM-based simulation model components are designed and assembled to rapidly build dynamic federates in HLA. A flexibly extensible simulation framework is developed to provide a component-oriented methodology for M&S and a common extensible simulation framework for various federates by composing BOM-based simulation model components to improve reusability and interoperability of HLA. The middleware technique is applied to design the simulation engine of the simulation framework and separates simulation model components with different running platforms so that federates can be agilely reconfigured and customized.

Research on Web-based Real-time Statistical method in combat simulation

Bin Chen; Qiang He; Rusheng Ju; Kedi Huang

The statistical & evaluation method in traditional combat simulation has betrayed its deficiencies in many aspects: data collecting, importing data to database, displaying statistical data, etc. The deficiencies have obstructed the further development of statistical & evaluation method in the combat simulation. Under the standard of extensible modeling & simulation framework (XMSF), web technology has been applied to distributed simulation more and more. The research on the Web-based statistical & evaluation method has become the new tide in simulations. This paper introduces the deficiencies of traditional statistical & evaluation method first. Given the deficiencies, the Web-based real-time statistical method is put forward. Then the work principle and the key techniques which include design of statistical data agent (SDA), design of real-time statistical calculation module and Web-based statistical data publication are illustrated in detail. Finally, it gives an application of the Web-based real-time statistical method and summarizes the characters and the future development of the new method.

C2 decision support system based on Symbiotic Simulation

Yun Zhou; Kedi Huang; Dewen Hu

Symbiotic simulation systems have been proposed as a new paradigm for discrete event simulation by having simulation and physical system interact in a mutually beneficial manner. Traditional C2 decision support system is analyzed, and the idea of symbiotic simulation is introduced. Then the conceptual framework of C2 decision support system based on symbiotic simulation is proposed. Each function of the various components of the system is discussed in detail respectively.

Research on applying JMASE to distributed simulation systems

Chuncai Wang; Quanmin Wang; Gang Guo; Ge Li; Kedi Huang

JMASE is a modeling and simulation environment that provides capabilities for defining models, combining models into simulations, executing simulations, and post-processing the results. It is designed to support high-fidelity engineering-level analyses required for weapon system development and acquisition. But it is difficult for JMASE models to interact with other simulations because the standard of JMASE is not accepted widely. Since HLA is a general-purpose architecture designed for simulation reuse and interoperability, it will be the standard through which JMASE simulations will communicate with other distributed simulation systems. Based on the characteristics and functions of JMASE as well as the interface specification of HLA, a JMASE-HLA framework is developed and its design is detailed in this paper. The paper also illustrates how to develop or alter federates using the framework through two applied testing examples and validates the efficiency and correctness of the framework.

A composable modeling approach of HLA simulation systems based on Petri nets

Yong Peng; Mei Yang; Jianxing Gong; Kedi Huang

Composable modeling enables the rapid, efficient and flexible assembly of simulation systems from components. To data there is a lack of formal descriptions for the process of composable modeling or composable modeling approaches are not operable in engineering. In view of the existing problems, a composable modeling approach based on Petri nets was proposed. Petri nets formal definition of component model was presented. Composition, substitution and deletion operations of component models were defined according to Petri nets operations. The process of composable modeling was transformed to Petri nets operations by the operations of component models. It was revealed by theoretical analysis that this approach based on Petri nets is a good solution to the problems of formal descriptions and operatability of composable modeling and can be used to describe composite models, federates and federations conveniently. The computability of composite models, federate and federations were also proven.
