Home gateway architecture and its implementation

Takeshi Saito; Ichiro Tomoda; Yoshiaki Takabatake; Junko Arni; Keiichi Teramoto

We proposed the home gateway architecture. We have implemented the Web server based home gateway, interconnecting IEEE 1394, the powerline home automation network, and the Internet, with real-time AV transcoding capability.

Networked home appliance system using Bluetooth technology integrating appliance control/monitoring with Internet service

Yosuke Tajika; Takeshi Saito; Keiichi Teramoto; Naohisa Oosaka; Masao Isshiki

In this paper, we introduce a novel home network system for creating new network and service architecture by connecting home appliances networked using Bluetooth technology with the Internet. In the system, we mainly propose a new method of home network formation using Bluetooth devices and a method to control/monitor networked home appliances with commands that are implicitly integrated within service contents offered by an application service provider to a user. Finally, we show the implementation and evaluation results, and we discuss the advantages of this system for white appliance networking.

Gateway technologies for home network and their implementations

We propose two gateway architectures. The first one is the home gateway, which interconnects home networks and the public (access) network. We show its requirements and software design. We implemented an experimental home gateway based on a Web server enhanced with Java facilities. It interconnects the Internet and the home networks (IEEE1394 AV network and the ECHONET home automation network). It also has a real time MP1394 transcoding function which transcodes AV data on IEEE1394 into MPEG4 video. It provides the capability of remote control of the home, and AV data transmission/translation capabilities. The second one is the wireless gateway. We show the background with respect to the wireless gateway and its design. The key issue is to develop interconnectivity between wired and wireless networks, and then we show our implementation of it. It interconnects IEEE1394 and 802.11b 2.4 GHz band high-speed wireless network, and transmits AV control commands and high-quality AV data.

XML-less EXI with code generation for integration of embedded devices in web based systems

Yusuke Doi; Yumiko Sato; Masahiro Ishiyama; Yoshihiro Ohba; Keiichi Teramoto

XML is a widely used as message serialization format in web-based open and heterogeneous systems because of its flexible data model. Internet-of-Things (IoT), or network with constrained nodes, is expected to be heterogeneous, and flexibility and expressiveness of XML are also good for IoT. However, RAM and bandwidth constraints on such nodes make handling of XML difficult. The authors are developing XML-less EXI to solve the problem. Our approach adopts Efficient XML Interchange (EXI) as alternative serialization form of XML. It solves the bandwidth problem of XML. At the same time, the authors apply code generation techniques to encode/decode EXI stream without XML data models on constrained nodes. Static state machines from a schema-informed EXI grammar enable constrained nodes to convert EXI data directly from/to its internal data. The authors show that XML-less EXI is highly efficient in RAM usage regardless of the size of an EXI stream and more compact in ROM size than other implementations. The authors also provide code size estimations for a set of schema-informed EXI grammars and insights on how to make the grammars compact.

EIGEN: XML-less EXI with code generation for smart energy home appliances

Yusuke Doi; Yumiko Sato; Keiichi Teramoto

In this research, we focus on EXI, the standard binary representation of XML. EXI encode and decoder translate between EXI data stream and XML document. We propose a way to read/write certain forms of structured data directly from/to EXI stream. In our approach, designers of home appliances configure data of interest against the schema of EXI stream, and we generate EXI encoder and decoder designed for the configured data structure only.
