Fault-tolerant control of induction motor drive for automotive Belt-Alternator-Starter application

In this paper, fault-tolerant control methodology developed for an induction motor drive used for automotive Belt-Alternator-Starter (BAS) application is presented. In particular, this paper addresses the operation of the induction machine in generating mode of operation with the high voltage battery disconnected. A novel pre-charging method was developed using the isolated gate drive power supplies in the inverter for the initial voltage build up in the high voltage dc side. Once the voltage builds up successfully, the control algorithm sustains the voltage to the commanded value and ensures stable operation of the electric power generation system. Detailed simulation models were developed to simulate the impact of the value of the dc bus capacitance, the control structure, gains and the control loop times on the dynamic performance of the drive under the worst case transient conditions. The proposed control algorithm was implemented on a developmental system and stable operation was achieved under all operating conditions including load dump scenarios.
