Abstract Traditional research in scheduling has concentrated on developing optimal and optional tending heuristic algorithms for n x m job shop and flow shop problems. Relatively no work has been conducted in the area of scheduling within a GT cell. This paper examines the GT cell environment from a scheduling perspective in relation to a job and flow shop, and presents a modified approach to scheduling within a GT cell that implicitly takes advantage of common setups and part family coding structures.

Abstract This paper overviews and compares three computer assisted, facilities design algorithms. A new algorithm that utilizes computer graphics in conjunction with more cost minimization is compared with two traditional block layout algorithms. A comparison is made using actual data obtained from a midwestern manufacturer.

Abstract This research provides the means of a realistic or a close to realistic layout development using practical constraints and objectives. An experimental system, FLUKES, is constructed based on the method for testing purpose. FLUKES uses these factors not only for the evaluation of layout, but also for the search to solution. This system develops optimized layouts within the boundary of the practical factors.

Abstract Three simulation languages are quantitatively compared in a manufacturing job shop environment. Both model size and model run length were varied to obtain data on compilation time, execution time. CPU time, memory time and the rate of change of these variables due to changes in the simulation period.

Abstract This is an analysis of a multishuttle system, using a car ferry as the example, to develop mathematical models of shuttle systems. Poisson-exponential mathematical models for the single- and two-shuttle systems are formulated as interdependent queueing systems. The vector (X A , X B ) representing the number of cars waiting at shore A and shore B respectively, at the end of an unloading at one of the shores is shown to form a bivariate Markov chain; thus the long run probability distributions of (X A , X B ) can be evaluated using classical Markov chain theory.

Abstract Sixty-six sources are abstracted and divided into sixteen subject areas. The sources include journal articles, papers presented at conferences, technical bulletins, theses, and textbooks. Sources within a subject area are arranged alphabetically by author. Those which refer to more than one subject area are cross-referenced by author and subject.
