Abstract Experimental studies on precharged particle filtration and a mechanism for the electrostatic effects of fabric filtration are described. The residual pressure drop and the rate of pressure drop are reduced and the capture efficiency of submicron particles is improved, possibly because of the repellent force between the charged particles and the charge on the dust cake, which is more loosely packed and porous. By heating the ground electrode of the precharger, a higher removal efficiency is obtained for a high resistivity fly ash (i.e., about 19 13 ohm cm and above).
