In January 2006, Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) Libraries began a successful embedded librarian program in the universitys College of Education and Educational Technology. The program has improved the librarys relationship with faculty and students; shaped a more relevant collection of print, media, and electronic resources that meets curriculum, instruction, and research needs; created opportunities for college/university library collaboration through new programs, team-teaching, and scholarly endeavors; and, most importantly, improved the quality of teaching and learning in the College of Education. The following article outlines the strategies IUP Libraries used to hire an embedded librarian, develop that librarians presence in the College of Education and, ultimately, strengthen the working relationship between the university library and the college.

Service learning is defined as a teaching and learning method that connects meaningful community service with academic learning, personal growth, and civic responsibility. In recent years, service learning has been presented as an effective pedagogy for early childhood education. This chapter will present a rationale for integrating service learning into early childhood education. Theoretical perspectives drawn largely from cognitive psychology and social learning theories will be considered along with national standards for effective practices in early childhood and teacher education. Then, drawing on these theories, principles for effective integration of service learning into early childhood teacher education will be outlined.

The internet provides wonderful learning opportunities that were not available to previous generations; however, there are also drawbacks to allowing young children to use internet-capable technology. This chapter identifies the specific dangers associated with online play and learning; reviews the international laws, government regulatory practices, and professional standards that protect children from online dangers; and provides tips and resources that parents and educators can employ/access to ensure that young children use technology safely and responsibly.
