This paper describes a parallel associative processor, lXM2, developed mainly for semantic network processing. IXM2 consists of 64 associative processors and 9 network processors, having a total of 256K words of associative memory. The large associative memory enables 65,536 semantic network nodes to be processed in parallel and reduces the order of algorithmic complexity to O( 1) in,basic semantic net operations. It is shown that IXM2 has computing power comparable to that of a Connection Machine. Programming for lXM2 is performed with the knowledge representation language IXL, a superset of Prolog, so that IXM2 can be utilized as a back-end to AI workstations.

Multilingual information processing technology has enabled us to handle the text of many languages and scripts. Technical difficulties, however, still remain in the field of displaying and printing text. Windowing systems and printers often lack support for scripts that are not widely used and there has been no simple and flexible remedy for this problem.

Abstract This paper describes an initial evaluation of an associative parallel processor, IXM2, for semantic network (SN) applications. IXM2 consists of 64 associative PEs and 9 network PEs, having in total 256 Kwords by 40 bits of associative memory (AM). IXM2 employs a new interconnection mechanism based on complete connection. AM is very effective in suppressing the computational explosion in large SN processing, Arithmetic and logical operations also can be done in parallel on all the words of AM, achieving 7200 MOPS for the less than operation. IXM2 executes programs written in the IXL language, a superset of Prolog. IXM2 can work as a back-end to AI workstations.
