The structure (I) of a new alkaloid, stemofoline isolated from the stems and leaves of Stemona japonica has been determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis of its hydrobromide monohydrate.

α-Coriofuranose: conformationally unfavoured structured in the crystalline state and rapid mutarotation of coriose

Coriose was found to undergo rapid mutarotation which was attributed to the furanose structure of this sugar in the crystalline state revealed by X-ray analysis.
