Supplypoint: Electronic Procurement using Virtual Supply Chains-An Overview

Susan Kerridge; Andrew Slade; Simon Kerridge; Kevin Ginty

Background In the area of Electronic Contracting and Virtual Company Formation within Supply-Chains there has been little research or development work. During this paper we will outline the European Union sponsored project SUPPLYPOINT (ESPRIT 27007) which addresses the issues of panEuropean electronic trade links for business-to-business and business-to-public body electronic commerce. This will be achieved by using virtual supply chains and covering a life cycle from contract identification to completion, including virtual supply chain management and electronic payments. It will provide a one-stop shopping service for companies to purchase goods and services from small / medium sized enterprises (SMEs) co-operating in virtual and dynamic supply chains. The project started on July 1 1998 and is co-funded by the European Commission to support the multi-national consortium conducting the research and development over a two year peroid.

Application Framework for Computational Chemistry AFCC Applied to New Drug Discovery

John Tindle; Mark Gray; Robert Warrender; Kevin Ginty; Peter Dawson

This paper describes the performance of a compute cluster applied to solve three dimensional 3D molecular modelling problems. The primary goal of this work is to identify new potential drugs. The paper examines the following issues: computational chemistry, computational efficiency, task scheduling, and the analysis of system performance. The philosophy of design for an application framework for computational chemistry AFCC is described. Various experiments have been carried out to optimise the performance of a cluster computer, the results analysed and the statistics produced are discussed in the paper.

CERIF for Datasets (C4D)

Scott Brander; Anna Clements; Valerie McCutcheon; Paul Cranner; Ryan Henderson; Kevin Ginty

The overall aim of CERIF for Datasets (C4D) is to develop a framework for incorporating metadata into CERIF (the Common European Research Information Format) such that research organisations and researchers can better discover and make use of existing and future research datasets, wherever they may be held. CERIF provides a standardised way of managing and exchanging research information and has been widely used for recording and exchanging information about research projects and publications. C4D looks at the suitability of CERIF for recording datasets, suggests ways that the model could be improved and implements pilot functionality based on the findings of C4D at the three partner Universities in the UK.

Identifying offenders on Twitter: A law enforcement practitioner guide

Graeme Horsman; Kevin Ginty; Paul Cranner

Abstract Twitter remains one of the most popular social media network sites in use today and continues to attract criticism over the volume of unsavoury and illegal content circulated by its users. When breaches of legislation occur, appropriate officials are left with the task of identifying and apprehending the physical user of an offending account, which is not always a simple task. This article provides a law enforcement practitioner focused analysis of the Twitter platform and associated services for the purposes of offender identification. Using our bespoke message harvesting tool ‘Twitterstream’, an analysis of the data available via Twitters Streaming and REST APIs are presented, along with the message metadata which can be gleaned. The process of identifying those behind offending Twitter accounts is discussed in line with available API content and current Twitter data retention policies in order to support law enforcement investigations surrounding this social media platform.
