The success of an endodontic treatment relies on a correct working length determination. The canal terminus must be detected accurately and a precise control of the working length during the endodontic treatment must be maintained. The aim of this study was to investigate the working length determination in vivo with the Quill Apex Locator® for apical limit established at 1 mm short from the apical foramen (AF). Patients scheduled to dental extraction due to orthodontic or periodontal reasons were selected for this study, resulting in a sample of 24 root canals. Written informed consent was obtained from each patient before the treatment. After the administration of local anesthesia each tooth had its pulp cavity accessed. Next, the reading corresponding to the AF showed on the devices display was recorded and the file was removed. With the use of a digital caliper, 1 mm was subtracted from that first measurement. The file with the new measurement was introduced into to the root canal again then fixed with light curing flow composite and the tooth was extracted. Next, one of the apical third walls was worn out to visualize the instruments point and the AF. The distance from the file tip to the AF was measured by scanning electron microscopy. The average of the measurements was 1.089±0.437 mm. The Bicaudal t-test showed no significant difference (p=0.338) between the experimental values and the hypothetical value tested at 1 mm. The present investigation confirmed that the Quill Apex Locator® was able to determine the working length with good reliability for the endodontic treatment, established at 1 mm short from the AF.

AbstractIntroduction: Different sodium hypochlorite concentrations are available for use during the mechanical preparation of root canals by reciprocating instruments. Because of the speed with which the channel is instrumented in this new reciprocating kinematics, higher concentrations of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) has been recommended. Thus, it is opportune to research to evaluate whether the irrigant NaOCl solution enhances the possibility of formation of dentinal defects caused by Reciproc system. Objective: To analyze the influence of irrigating sodium hypochlorite solution in the formation of dentinal defects caused by Reciproc instrumentation system. Material and method: We used 60 extracted first premolars were divided into two groups (G1) NaOCl 5.25% (n = 30); (G2 Control) Distilled water (n = 30), only the buccal conduit was instrumented with Reciproc system and irrigated with the solutions. All the crowns of the teeth were cut perpendicular to the long axis, and the roots included in alveoli and simulated periodontal ligament. Palatal conduits were not instrumented or irrigated, because they served as a control for the specimen itself. At the end of the instrumentation, the roots were cut at 2, 4, 6 and 8 mm from the apical foramen and taken to the stereoscopic microscope to assess and record the formation of dentinal defects.

IntroductionThe sealing of occlusal surfaces as an effective procedure in the prevention of dental caries, its recognition since 1976 by ADA, has been used as a preventive, safe and effective method.ObjectiveThis study aimed at analyzing the products used as pit and fissure sealant of human teeth, which noted concern, is the property of penetration and porosity viewed in the scanning electron microscope (SEM).Material and methodThere was sealing of 40 pre-molars, previously submitted to prophylaxis with pumice stone and water and separated into two groups of twenty teeth each. In one of the groups was used sealant polymerized by light Fluroshield ® and in another, glass ionomer cement Vidrion R ® and ten remaining teeth as control. After those procedures are implemented, the teeth were cutted transversely by precision saw, samples were cleaned, fixed and then observed in SEM.ResultAs a result, the resin sealant fotopolimerizavel showed greater penetration in 71.5% of the samples, reaching the regions deep fissure, and better adherence and less porosity, while the glass ionomer cement, used as a sealant, had higher porosity and in none of the samples struck the fissure deeper region.ConclusionThe resin sealant has better properties in the questions discussed.
