Construction of university ontology

Ayesha Ameen; Khaleel Ur Rahman Khan; B. Padmaia Rani

Ontology is an integral part of semantic web. Ontology can be to design and create metadata elements required for developing semantic web applications. The evolution of semantic web has encouraged creation of ontologies in many domains. In this paper we describe various steps involved in creation of university ontology. University ontology contains the details of working of a university. University ontology can be applied to a particular university. We have used protégé 4.0 alpha tool for the construction of university ontology.

Extracting knowledge from ontology using Jena for semantic web

Ayesha Ameen; Khaleel Ur Rahman Khan; B. Padmaja Rani

Semantic Web extends the current web by standardizing the semantics. Purpose of Semantic Web is to make people share data and content among different applications. This is made possible by using ontologies which represents shared understanding of a domain. Semantic Web uses ontologies for representing knowledge in a uniform way that can be easily processed and shared among machine. This paper gives detail description of the role of ontologies in Semantic Web and tools required for constructing Semantic Web applications. An application is created which loads the ontology created in Protégé into Eclipse and displays the properties and classes of ontology.

Ontological student profile

Ayesha Ameen; Khaleel Ur Rahman Khan; B. Padmaja Rani

Ontologies are very popular in building knowledge base. In this paper we have created ontology based student profile. There are many advantages of using ontology based student profile which are explored in this paper. This paper gives a detailed description of each step involved in student profile creation. Student profile is created using protégé 4.0 alpha tool.

Creation of Ontology in Education Domain

Ayesha Ameen; Khaleel Ur Rahman Khan; B. Padmaja Rani

The backbone of semantic web is ontology. In this paper we demonstrate the construction of ontology in education domain. We have constructed a course ontology which contains the complete details regarding various courses offered by the university. Course ontology can be used as a guide by the students for selecting a future course depending on their existing qualification. Course ontology is constructed using Protégé 4.0 alpha tool.

Semi-Automatic Merging of Ontologies using Protégé

Ayesha Ameen; Khaleel Ur Rahman Khan; B. Padmaja Rani

Ontologies play a crucial role in bringing the Semantic Web vision to its full potential. Ontologies are developed at different levels of abstraction and by different people for various purposes. Knowledge represented by the ontologies is scattered because of existence of many ontologies representing the same concepts, therefore it becomes difficult to analyse, study and use the knowledge spread across many ontologies if they are studied individually. Knowledge represented by ontologies can be combined into a single ontology which is shown in this paper. Ontologies can be merged to combine the knowledge from different ontologies. In this paper we have shown the merger of two ontologies first ontology is university second ontology is the Student profile ontology containing details of Student which were developed in educational domain. Ontologies were developed and merged using protege 4.0 alpha tools. General Terms Artificial Intelligence

Building OWL Ontology: LMSO-Library Management System Ontology

Ayesha Banu; Syeda Sameen Fatima; Khaleel Ur Rahman Khan

The World Wide Web has become an important knowledge and communication resource today. Most of the people use the web for variety of tasks. The current web is based on HTML which mostly restricts processing of information on web to manual keyword searches and results in much of irrelevant information retrieval. This limitation may be overcome by a new web architecture known as semantic web which is an intelligent and meaningful web proposed by Sir Tim Berner’s Lee. In his roadmap for semantic web, Ontology plays an important role in use and re-use of knowledge, shared and common understanding of a domain that can be communicated between people and across application systems which is the goal of semantic web. Ontology Development is one of the most fundamental and significant issue of concern. This paper contains a brief on ontology construction considering all the important concepts and relationships between them with possible restrictions included. The paper mainly focus on creation of class & subclass hierarchy, properties with their characteristics and restrictions, instance creation, and reasoning on LMSO.

A re-usability approach to ontology construction

Ayesha Banu; Syeda Sameen Fatima; Khaleel Ur Rahman Khan

Knowledge Representation is largely based on ontologies in the Semantic Web. One of the major difficulties to construct ontology such that it meets the requirements of users is the high cost incurred and time consumed in building them. Gathering complete knowledge about the domain of disclosure is time consuming and may not guarantee expected results too. Therefore reuse of existing ontologies can offer a cost and time benefit alternative than building new ones from scratch. Hence, an approach is proposed to reuse the existing ontologies available on the web and online libraries to build new ontologies. This paper presents an approach to retrieve the required ontologies on basis of important terms of domain from online repositories using semantic web search engines, preprocess them as per our requirement and merge them to form the entire domain ontology.
