We are willing to pay to support wetland conservation: local users' perspective

Sara Kaffashi; Mad Nasir Shamsudin; Alias Radam; Khalid Abdul Rahim; Mohd Rusli Yacob

The main objective of this study is to elicit the benefits that arise from Shadegan wetland in southern Iran to the users of this ecosystem, who are impacted most significantly by degradation/conversion of this ecosystem. Hence, a choice experiment (CE) and contingent valuation method (CVM) survey of users of the Shadegan wetland were conducted to estimate the value of non-market services provided by the wetland. The benefits from high-level conservation of the wetland are estimated from CVM to be about US

8.28. Findings of this study suggest that the high value of Shadegan wetland for user communities can help policy-makers and wetland managers adopt policies that have no further conversion benefits than conservation or risks of degradation.

Rice Industry in Malaysia: Challenges, Policies and Implications

Yogambigai Rajamoorthy; Khalid Abdul Rahim; Subramaniam Munusamy

Traffic accidents are the reason for 25% of unnatural deaths in Iran. The main objective of this study is to find a simple model for the estimation of economic costs especially in Islamic countries (like Iran) in a straightforward manner. The model can show the magnitude of traffic accident costs with monetary equivalent. Data were collected from different sources that included traffic police records, insurance companies and hospitals. The conceptual framework, in our study, was based on the method of Ayati. He used this method for the estimation of economic costs in Iran. We promoted his method via minimum variables. Our final model has only three available variables which can be taken from insurance companies and police records. The running model showed that the traffic accident costs were US

Impact of climate change on food security in Malaysia: economic and policy adjustments for rice industry

Negin Vaghefi; Mad Nasir Shamsudin; Alias Radam; Khalid Abdul Rahim

Natural resources are often victims of development. On the one hand, a freeway is under construction, while on the other hand there are unique natural resources along the route of the freeway. Both of them are essential to us. Thus, we cannot ignore either of them. The purpose of this study is to find the monetary equivalent of the natural resources in response to a challenge between environment and development. Dealing with non-use values, we apply the contingent valuation method (CVM). Our results show that the mean of willingness to pay (WTP) is US

Effluent charge reform for controlling water pollution in the Malaysian crude palm oil industry

Amir Hossein Montazer Hojat; Khalid Abdul Rahim

Rice is the second most important crop in the world after wheat, with Asia being the largest producer and consumer. The National Agrofood Policy of Malaysia, 2011-2012 (Dasar Agromakanan Negara, DAN) had highlighted that local rice production should be increased to ensure the countrysdemand in future. However, to what extend this ensures food security in Malaysia was not supported empirically so far. The objective of this study is to estimate the future need of rice industry in Malaysia based on past performances. Using polynomial curve on historical production, consumption, export and import values from 1963 to 2013, this study has projected the production and consumption value for the 19-year period between 2012 and 2030. The results had revealed an increasing demand for rice with declining supply can be only off-set by import of rice in future.

Analysis of car commuters knowledge, awareness and willing to modal shift in Klang Valley, Malaysia

Sara Kaffashi; Mad Nasir Shamsudin; Shaufique Fahmi Sidique; Abdullatif Bazrbachi; Alias Radam; Khalid Abdul Rahim

SummaryThe impact of environmental regulations on the welfare of Malaysian palm oil growers, producers, and refiners are evaluated in an open-economy model. The estimated incremental effects of effluent standards and changes have been specifically rather small, with the exception of those upon the growers, but the cumulative effects have been considerable.
