Detailed theoretical calculations of the properties of the neutron-excess odd-odd nucleus 134Sb are performed by using different theoretical approaches. A comprehensive comparison with the recent experimental data is performed; this comparison suggests the presence of isomeric states among the low-lying levels of this nucleus. These states are the twins of the corresponding levels of the odd-odd nucleus 210Bi that is situated near the stability line. The obtained results manifest the similarity of nuclear structure in the region of the “remote” doubly magic nucleus 132Sn and in the region of the classical stable doubly magic nucleus 208Pb.

The properties of the 136Xe nucleus are theoretically investigated by using two different approaches: the two-quasiparticle RPA method and the shell-model calculation. The investigated characteristics include both the energy levels and the electromagnetic properties of 136Xe. Comprehensive comparison with the experiment that includes all the currently available experimental data is performed.

An analysis has been made of experimental data on level spectra, single-nucleon transfer reactions near closed shells, and data on the polarization effects in charge-exchange (p, n) reactions between isoanalog states of nuclei with even A. The analysis has allowed us to conclude that there is a significant difference between the spin-orbit splittings of neutrons and protons in identical orbitals. This conclusion is confirmed in a framework of different theoretical approaches.

Abstract Experimental studies at the OSIRIS fission-product mass separator have yielded a wealth of new results on the doubly-magic region near 132 Sn. In the following we focus on two aspects of the new results: on the evidence for octupole collectivity of the 3 1 − state in 132 Sn and on the similarity of the 208 Pb and 132 Sn regions as evidenced from the modelling of the low excitations in 132 Sb. The Stage-I of the PIAFE facility recently proposed at Grenoble will offer exciting possibilities for even more detailed studies of the doubly magic regions near 132 Sn and 78 Ni (the latter for the first time).

The excitation energies and E2 transition rates in 130Sn and 134Sn—nuclei having either two neutron holes or two neutron particles above the doubly magic core of 132Sn, are calculated in the framework of the particle-particle RPA method. The calculations are strongly grounded on the most recent experimental data on the structure of single neutron states in the odd-neutron nuclei close to 132Sn. The discussion of the results is focused on the inter-comparison of the effective charges in the 132Sn core ± 2 neutrons systems.
