Preliminary Study on Soft Keyboard with Recommendation for Mobile Device

Ki-Tae Hwang; Jae-Moon Lee

Abstract Recently most mobile devices have soft keyboards on their LCD touch screens. Because of the tiny size of the touch screen of the soft keyboard, adjacent keys are mistakenly typed. Also utilizing a key for multiple key inputs causes key type errors. In this paper, we proposed an algorithm to recommend proper words to the user while the user continues to type keys, which helps to easily correct key type errors. In addition, we presented a soft keyboard called MissLess which implemented the recommendation algorithm. We evaluated recommendation performance of MissLess keyboard through experiments by using 3 test sets. The test results showed that the success ratio of recommendation reached up to about 90% although there were some differences between results. However it is needed to be considered that we recommended 4 words for an input word in this experiments Key Words : Android, Soft keyboard, Recommendation, Mobile device, Touch screen * 정회원, 한성대학교 컴퓨터공학과 (교신저자) ** 정회원, 한성대학교 멀티미디어공학과접수일자 2013년 10월 11일, 수정완료 2013년 11월 26일 게재확정일자 2013년 12월 13일Received: 11 October, 2013 / Revised: 26 November, 2013 Accepted: 13 December, 2013

Overlapped disk access for real-time disk I/O

Ki-Tae Hwang; Chang Yeol Choi

Disk subsystems of soft real time systems are designed to meet the deadlines of the real time disk I/O commands as much as possible. The paper examines methods to get the best out of active hardware components in a disk drive and evaluates the real time performances of the methods. Some of the active hardware components in a disk drive are idle for some time, while a disk I/O command is being serviced by some active hardware components in the disk drive. If the idle time is used for the next pending disk I/O command, the disk I/O command could be serviced much earlier. We develop three models of overlapped disk access which service two adjacent disk I/O commands concurrently by overlapping. The new disk model embedding the overlapped disk access methods is also proposed. It is evaluated via simulations, and its real time performance is compared with traditional disk drives. The results of the performance evaluation show that the proposed disk model has a much better real time performance than traditional disk drives in real time computing environments.

Performance Evaluation of MissLess Soft Keyboard with Recommendation

Ki-Tae Hwang; Tae-Wan Kim; Hye-Kyung Cho

In this paper, we evaluated the performance of recommendation and run time of the MissLess soft keyboard developed in the previous research. The MissLess keyboard assigns a hash code per each word for all words within its mobile dictionary. It decides recommendation words through three consecutive processes such as hash filtering, sorting based on spelling similarity, and finally recommendation based on frequency of use. Each process has some factors to have an impact on the recommendation success. We conducted experiments in an Android mobile device running the MissLess keyboard and measured performance of recommendation and run time overhead according to the impact factors. In this paper, we showed the experiment results.

Video Player for Online SVC Stream in Android Platform

Ki-Tae Hwang

This paper introduces an implementation of SVC player which runs on Android platform and can play SVC video stream on line from SVC video server. SVC(Scalable Video Coding) is a scalable video encoding technique which supports three scalability such as temporal scalability, spatial scalability, and quality scalability. To implement the SVC player on Android, we implemented a SVC decoder using JSVM open source written in C/C++ as a native part on Android and developed Android UI in Java. Also we built an SVC encoding system off line and an SVC streaming server to conduct on-line SVC streaming experiments. Finally, after we installed the SVC player developed in this paper on Motoroi mobile phone, we evaluated and analyzed on-line streaming performance of the SVC player. The result showed that the player worked well and it had no jitter in streaming with the size of QCIF and 10fps from a fully encoded SVC video source.

A Design and Implementation of Prototype of Dual Screen Platform on Android

Ki-Tae Hwang; Hye-Kyung Cho

【Since only one application has monopoly on LCD device of the mobile device in Android platform, the user can not see two screens together displayed by two applications running simultaneously. In this paper, a dual-app has been defined as two mobile applications running on each device of a pair of two mobile devices and DSAP or Dual Screen Android Platform has been implemented. DSAP does remote-execution of the peer application of a dual-app on the peer mobile device when either application of the dual-app starts to run and supports communication of the pair app over the network. This paper describes details of design and implementation of DSAP and shows a sample case utilizing DSAP.】

Remote Power Management System for Large Scale PC Network

Ki-Tae Hwang; Jae Moon Lee

Since most education organizations such as Universities have a plenty of PCs, much electric power can be wasted if their power states are not managed properly. This paper introduces the RPM(Remote Power Management) software system implemented to reduce a waste of PC power in Universities. The System manager can monitor power state of all PCs in a University and turn off PCs or change power states of PCs to low power states. The RPM consists of three software modules. First, Power Controller, which is installed in each user PC, saves the power by changing low power state by utilizing low power algorithm proposed in this paper. Also it reports power state of its PC to Power Server on the state changed. Second, Power Server module gathers power state information of all PCs, stores them in a DB, and sends all or some parts of the information to Power Viewer whenever the manager asks. The manager can turn off or change a certain PC to low power state. We evaluated the performance of power saving for the RPM and the result showed achievement of 40% power saving.

An Authoring Tool for Hangul Soft Keyboard in Android

Ki-Tae Hwang; In-Hwan Jung

Most mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets have a soft keyboard implemented on the LCD touch screen to receive text inputs from the user. Because the size of the LCD screen is small, many efforts are going on to develop efficient soft keyboard with less key buttons. Especially, Hangul soft keyboard needs much time, effort, and deep software technology in developing an Hangul automata program module. This paper introduces design and implementation details of our authoring tool for Hangul soft keyboard running in Android. The tool supports the user to build an unique soft keyboard easily. The authoring tool downloads the soft keyboard app to the user`s smartphone and makes it run immediately.
