A novel power curve monitoring method for wind turbines was developed to prevent a turbine failure in a wind farm. Compared with the existing methods, this algorithm automatically calculates the power curve limits for power curve monitoring, even when a considerable number of abnormal data are included in wind speed-output power data measured at a wind turbine. In addition, the proposed algorithm automatically generates an alarm message when the wind speed-power data measured at the wind turbine deviate from the power curve limits, particularly considering their degree of deviation from the power curve limits and the cases when the measured data hover between the Warning Zones and the Alarm Zones. We confirmed its effectiveness through its field tests.

The current paper deals with a new live-line insulator inspection tool system that will be used by the Korea Electric Power Corporation for its 154 kV power transmission lines in 2011. Unlike the existing contact type tools, the developed inspection tool automates parts of the insulator inspection process using a sensor and an actuator. The tool sustains its weight independently, not by a lineman. In addition, the inspection tool measures the insulation resistance of an insulator together with its distribution voltage, thus providing more information for analysis and diagnosis. Such characteristics improve the systems operation efficiency, measurement reliability, and usability. We confirmed its effectiveness through live-line field tests with actual power transmission lines.

As wind power has increased steadily, the importance of a condition monitoring system is being emphasized to maximize the availability and reliability of a wind turbine. To develop the advanced algorithms for fault detection and lifespan estimation, a wind turbine simulator is essential for verification of the proposed algorithms before applying them to a condition diagnosis & integrity prognosis system. The developed new-type simulator in this paper includes blades and various sensors as well as a motor, a gearbox and a generator of which the existing simulators generally consist. It also has similarity with a 3MW class wind turbine and can be used to acquire operational data from various operation conditions. This paper presents a design method of control logic for the wind turbine simulator, which gives a wind generation method and similar dynamic characteristics with the 3MW wind turbine. Finally, the proposed control logic is verified through experiments.

In our previous paper, we developed an insulator inspection robot system for a suspension insulator string in the 345kV power transmission line. However, this robot cannot be applied to a tension insulator string, because its constituent insulators are different in diameter and height from those of a suspension insulator string. To solve this problem, we developed a new live-line insulator inspection robot system that is applicable to both suspension and tension insulator strings. We confirmed its effectiveness through live-line performance tests.
