Efficiency analysis of controls in EDI applications

Sangjae Lee; Kidong Lee; In Won Kang

The high penetration levels of electronic data interchange (EDI), a mechanism for inter-organizational electronic commerce, has revolutionized the way organizational conduct their business. Major benefits derived from EDI, however, depend upon the use of appropriate controls to overcome potential risks and exposures inherent in integrating and utilizing of the system. As many resources and skills are required for the implementation of EDI controls, their design should proceed carefully. This paper discusses a description of a data envelopment analysis (DEA) model for analysis of the controls for a specific context of electronic data interchange. A data envelopment analysis model to analyze the efficiency of controls in the context of finance and trade. The model uses eight variables of formal or automated EDI controls as input and four variables of EDI implementation and performance as output. Automated controls are more efficiently utilized in financial than in trade applications, while formal controls are more efficiently used in trade applications. Every company can determine the relative amount of reduction in each mode or component of controls in order to make the control system efficient.

Fuzzy cognitive map-based approach to evaluate EDI performance: a test of causal model

Sangjae Lee; Byung Gon Kim; Kidong Lee

Abstract This paper proposes the usage of fuzzy cognitive map (FCM) for the evaluation of electronic data interchange (EDI) performance. Although there has been a stream of research on the performance of EDI systems during the last decades, possible interrelationships among those individual factors of EDI performance have been largely ignored and thereby were not adequately examined. The main task of evaluation of EDI performance demands consideration of the complex causal relationship among EDI performance factors. It is difficult even for experts in organizational behavior to cognitively predict the causal effect of one factor on the others. A FCM is used to describe the inference process for the evaluation of EDI performance. Initially, structural equation models are used for identifying relevant relationships among the factors and indicating their direction and strength. This study collected data from the 202 companies, which already experienced EDI systems implementation. The derived five factors include reduction of processing time, improved information quality, decreased processing cost, improved operational efficiency, competitive advantage. Findings indicate that a causal model of EDI performance adequately capture each of the proposed variables. The cognitive map provides preliminary insights into the causal model of EDI performance.

Robust regression-based analysis of drug–nucleic acid binding

David E. Booth; Kidong Lee

Outlier detection can be very important in analyzing data from Scatchard plots. In this study, a robust (outlier-resistant) regression procedure was used in conjunction with a Scatchard plot to study the binding of the methylphenazinium cation with double-stranded DNA. The procedures, their results, and their advantages are discussed.

Retaining talent by enhancing organizational prestige: An HRM strategy for employees working in the retail sector

Neerpal Rathi; Kidong Lee

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of perceived external prestige on turnover intentions among retail employees in India. Moreover, this study aims to explore the mediating effect of affective commitment on the relationship between perceived external prestige and turnover intentions. Design/methodology/approach – This study is quantitative in nature. The data for the present study were collected from 186 employees working in various retail stores. Existing, established scales were used to measure the research constructs. Findings – The results of the study indicate a negative relationship between perceived external prestige and turnover intentions. A negative relationship was observed between affective commitment and turnover intentions. Moreover, affective commitment was observed to partially mediate the relationship between perceived external prestige and turnover intentions. Practical implications – This study provides valuable insights into understanding the significance ...

A Prototype System Developed for Digital Rights Management in Electronic Commerce

Kidong Lee; David E. Booth

ABSTRACT The Internet provides a new way of doing business, but ease of copying and of sharing valuable digital information illegally across the Internet undermines many viable business models. This paper investigates Digital Rights Management (DRM) as a means to provide safe protection and proper delivery of digital contents through the Information highway. First, we briefly summarize the current endeavor of DRM technical development and its standardization process in key technical working groups. Then, the paper provides a generic architecture for a DRM framework and shows the implementation of a prototype DRM system incorporating key conceptual and technical standardization development. This study emphasizes the importance of developing the DRM architecture that provides the proper protection and safe transformation of digital contents in electronic commerce.

Effectiveness of Feature Space Selection on Credit Engineering on Multi-group Classification Cases

Junghee Park; Kidong Lee; Jinhwa Kim

This study tests the sensitivity of input feature space selection on credit rating using four classifiers as backpropagation(BP), Kohonen self-organizing feature map, discriminant analysis(DA), and logistic regression. The results of the study are that at individual methods applied, BP network outperforms two statistical counterparts while Kohonen network shows the least accuracy among the models. The results also show that the selection of the feature spaces to the accuracy outcome may not be very sensitive when we test the four methodologies altogether at aggregate level.
