OBJECTIVE The benefits of plastination specimens in temporal bone surgery (TBS) were evaluated. METHODS A formalin-preserved human temporal bone was drilled and dissected with the middle cranial fossa approach or the translabyrinthine (or transcochlear) approach. The specimen was thereafter subjected to silicon impregnation. RESULTS The flexibility of the dura mater after plastination was maintained, and not only bony structures such as the auditory ossicles and semicircular canals but also soft tissues such as the facial nerve, internal carotid artery and the sinus attached to the dura mater were easily discriminated. CONCLUSION The technique furnishes a persistently dry, odorless and durable specimen that allows handling and may serve as the most ideal specimen for anatomical learning of various approaches of TBS.

The therapeutic results obtained from the treatment of juvenile laryngeal papillomas with combined laser surgery and alpha-type IFN treatment are reported. Three cases of papilloma occurring under four years of age were found to be of the fulminant type with a strong tendency for recurrence. The results were complete remission of papilloma in two cases and a residual trace in one case. Thus, at present, control of the disease has been successful. A combination of several modes of treatment may be necessary for a more lasting therapeutic effect. Currently, no single method has been used to treat the disease. Laser surgery and IFN are both powerful therapies for this tenacious disease.

A clinicopathological study was done on 73 patients with parotid tumors treated during the past nine years in the Department of Otolaryngology, Shikoku Cancer Center Hospital. In 28 cases the tumor was classified histologically as benign parotid tumor, in 21 cases as malignant, and in 24 cases as tumor of non-parotid gland origin. The pathology, diagnosis, therapy and prognosis in these cases were evaluated and discussed.

A clinicopathological study was done on 21 cases of nasopharyngeal malignancy seen from 1977 to 1985 at the Department of Head and Neck Diseases, Shikoku Cancer Center Hospital. The male to female ratio was 12 to 9. The age range was 29 to 85 years, with a median age of 70 years. Pathohistological classification showed 14 carcinomas, 6 malignant lymphomas, and 1 rhabdomyosarcoma. The patients were treated with radiation therapy and chemotherapy:the prognosis of malignant lymphoma found to be better than that of carcinoma.
