Application of Caustic Method to Stress Analysis in Cutting Operation. In Case of Plates with Un-uniformly Continuously Distributing Load.

Kiyoshi Isogimi; Yoshio Ototake; Hiroshi Kunitomo

In this paper the properties of caustic were made clear to apply this experimental method to stress analysis in cutting operations. Under simplified two dimensional conditions, the objects of study are a wedge shaped plane and a half plane with un-uniformly continuously distributing load over loading region. Specimens are made of acrylate resin plate of 3 mm thickness. The caustic patterns formed by reflected lights from the both surfaces of plate are observed and their characteristics with loading conditions are investigated in detail. On the other hand the computational patterns based on optical theory and mapping method are plotted. These two patterns are coincided accurately enough. With obtained results the convenient simple formula to evaluate end values of external load is proposed.

Caustic interference fringes formed by the reflecting of light rays from any internal point of the objective plate are investigated to apply Caustic experimental method to problems like three-dimensional stress analysis. Half planes with concentrated or uniformly distributing loads are adopted and Caustic fundamental theory and formulae are reestablished. Experimental specimens made of acrylate resin plate are fabricated by combining various thicknesses of plates using adhesive. Caustic patterns of the bonding surface are observed and the characteristics of the reflecting positions are investigated in detail. The computational theoretical patterns ased on the obtained formulae are also plotted. The comparison of the results of the two methods shows good agreement. Therefore the application of this method to three-dimensional problems have tremendous possibilities.

Katsumi Yamaguchi; Motomi Uchida; Naotoshi Wada; Kiyoshi Isogimi

In present study, the authors propose the new method to find the pressure distribution acting on contact surface and develop the measuring device. The principle of pressure measuring is based on the scattered surface reflection of light from the surface after contact. With this device, a pressure distribution is measured automatically and displayed in three dimension. It is shown pressure distributions in various contact cases measured actually using the developed device.

Fundamental Research of Stress Analysis in Cutting Tool by Means of Caustics Formed by Reflected Light from Metal Surface

Kiyoshi Isogimi; Kiyoharu Hayakawa; Hajime Kurita

In this paper the fundamental investigations are performed to measure the stresses at the cutting edge during metal cutting operation by using of the method of Caustics formed by reflected light ray from the metal surface. In standard method of Caustics the models made of the transparent material are used, but for the stress analysis in the cutting tool under the actual operating conditions it is needed to investigate the difference from using the transparent model by performing the experiments using the metallic model. Two dimensional problems are treated and the objects of study are half plane and wedge shaped plane loaded perpendicularly or obliquely. Specimens are made of aluminium plate of about 6 mm thickness. The Caustics patterns formed by the reflected light from the polished front surface were observed and those characteristics with the loading conditions are investigated in detail. On the other hand the computational patterns based on the optical theory are plotted. These two patterns are coincided accurately enough. Furthermore it was found that the presented results for the metallic specimens were similar to those of previous report for the transparent specimens under the same loading conditions.
