Egypt is the richest source of primary documents for the economy, society and everyday life of the late antique Mediterranean world. Its thousands of papyri provide insight into aspects and topics ignored by ancient authors. This handbook is an indispensable tool in navigating these documents, which use a host of complex systems to date legal transactions. Extensive tables and lists help the reader understand the use of consulates, the indiction cycle, eras, and dates by imperial reigns. Other formal aspects of the documents, including Christian invocations and sworn oaths, are also fully covered.

Miniature Codices from Kellis

This article contains a first edition of two wooden mini-codices found during Australian excavations at Ismant el-Kharab (ancient Kellis) in the Dakhleh Oasis (Egypt). The first codex contains fifteen Greek hexameters belonging to an anonymous and unknown parody of Homer; the second codex contains three Greek division tables. Both texts date from the fourth century CE and apparently come from a local school.

P.Vindob. G 31701 verso: A Prefectural (?) Hypographe

The text on the recto of P.Vindob. G 31701 was published, together with a description of the papyrus and notes on the text, by M. C. E. Mineur-van Kassen in P.David (= P.Lugd. Bat. XVII) 7: lnstruction to track down murderers (Oxyrhynchite Nome, 28. ii. 258 or 259 A. D.).

Family Papers from Second-Century A.D. Kellis

Edition of seven Greek 2nd-century C.E. papyri excavated at Ismant al-Kharab (Kellis). These documents (2 census declarations, 4 complete, respectively fragmentarily preserved contracts and 1 tax receipt) illustrate a relatively early phase of the occupation of the settlement. The census declarations suggest the existence of female professional spinners at Kellis.

Literarische Papyri aus Soknopaiou Nesos. Eine Übersicht

Aus der Anzahl erhaltener literarischer Texte auf den Bildungsstand der Bevolkerung zu schliesen, ist ohne Frage ein legitimer Standpunkt und kann gerade fur Soknopaiu Nesos, einen durch Papyrusfunde gut dokumentierten Ort, beachtenswerte Ruckschlusse ermoglichen.

Ein addendum lexicis in P.Soterichus

P.Soterichus 4 (Theadelphia, 87 n. ehr.) ist ein Vertrag uber eine Teilpacht eines Dattelpalmgartens mit einer Grose von 11 h Aruren. Als Pachtsumme sind pro Jahr 50 Silberdrachmen und Sonderabgaben (Z. 14 ff.) festgelegt. Diese Sonderabgaben sind in der Lesung der Edition:

Bemerkungen zur Höhe der Wohnungsmiete in eineigen Papyri aus dem byzantinischen Ägypten

In seiner Untersuchung zur Miete von Gebauden in den Papyri gibt H. Muller auf S. 345-361 eine instruktive Ubersichtsliste des einschlagigen Urkundenmaterials, auf dem seine Untersuchung basiert. Er hat in dankenswerter Weise die wichtigsten Elemente aus jedem einzelnen Vertrag spaltenweise zusammengefast und bei der Angabe des Mietpreises die Terminologie des jeweiligen Textes gen au wiedergegeben.
