Selective formation of a complex of polyadenylate with an impurity in higher plant nucleic acid preparations

Abstract Phenol-preparations of higher plant nucleic acids generally resulted in severe contamination by an impurity bound selectively to synthetic polyadenylate (poly(A)). The poly(A) was rapidly bound into a form that was resistant to RNase T2. The impurity sedimented at about 14 S in a sucrose density gradient and had a bouyant density of 1.61 g/cm3 resembling that of polysaccharide. Natural poly(A)-containing RNA also was bound effectively to this impurity.
