Harmonic Identification for Active Power Filters Via Adaptive Tabu Search Method

Harmonic identification by using Adaptive Tabu Search (ATS) Method embedded in the active power filter is proposed in this paper. The use of the ATS identifies harmonic components more accurately and precisely. Besides the accuracy and precision, it is able to select only some particular harmonic orders that cause severe consequences to the system for elimination. This principle thus leads to the reduction in size and cost of hardware implementation + active power filters. In this paper, two test current waveforms are simulated to validate and verify the performance of the proposed algorithm. The satisfactory results obtained by this identification method are also com-pared against those obtained by the d-q axis based harmonic identification method. As a result, the ATS based method has better performance for eliminating only selective harmonic orders over the d-q method. Furthermore, the compensated current from the proposed method has a good transient response while there is the first-cycle delay due to the use of the d-q method.

Moving Towards a New Era of Intelligent Protection Through Digital Relaying in Power Systems

This paper presents an intelligent approach for digital relaying de- sign. Due to a powerful search scheme of the selected intelligent method, digi- tal relays are well discriminated to satisfy a large number of constraints, which are so complicated over the ability of the conventional relay setting. Also, the proposed scheme is demonstrated through a small 5-bus power system, in which six digital relays are situated to be smartly discriminated.

A New Design Approach of Fuzzy Controller for Shunt Active Power Filter

Abstract This article presents a new approach for designing a fuzzy controller for a shunt active power filter without the experience of specialist. Moreover, a new method for calculating reference currents, synchronous detection with Fourier, is also proposed in this article. The hardware in the loop simulation technique is applied to simulate harmonic elimination via a shunt active power filter using the new ideas proposed herein. The eZdsp F28335 (Spectrum Digital Incorporated, Stafford, Texas, USA) cooperates with the Simulink (The MathWorks, Natick, Massachusetts, USA) program for hardware in the loop simulation. The results confirm that the fuzzy controller designed by the new approach can provide a good performance, and it is more robust compared with the proportional and integral controller when the system parameters are changed.

Applications of the generalized state-space averaging method to modelling of DC–DC power converters

Power converter models are time varying because of the switching action of power electronic devices. To find time-invariant models, this tutorial article presents the applications of the generalized state-space averaging method to the modelling of a zeta converter feeding a resistive load and paralleled buck converters driving a DC motor. Simulations using the proposed models with MATLAB coding agree well with the results of PSIM™ and SimPowerSystem™ of SIMULINK. Beside, simulations using the proposed model reduce the simulation time by 64% as an average in comparison with the available software packages.

Adaptive Fuzzy Control for Shunt Active Power Filters

Abstract This article proposes a novel adaptive fuzzy controller for shunt active power filters. The main fuzzy controller operated with the auxiliary fuzzy controller is called the adaptive fuzzy controller. This controller can perfectly control the compensating currents for any harmonic loads in the system. A new approach to design the auxiliary fuzzy controller without the engineering experiences is presented; moreover, the synchronous detection with Fourier method for harmonic detection is also proposed. A proportional and integral controller is used for the DC bus voltage control of shunt active power filter. The eZdspTMf28335 board (Spectrum Digital Incorporated, Stafford, Texas, USA) is the main processor in the system. The experimental results of harmonic elimination can confirm good performance of the adaptive fuzzy controller designed by the new approach operated with the synchronous detection with Fourier method. Furthermore, the average value for the percent of total harmonic distortion of the source currents after compensation is satisfied under IEEE Standard 519-1992 [1].

Instantaneous power theory with fourier and optimal predictive controller design for shunt active power filter

This paper presents a novel harmonic identification algorithm of shunt active power filter for balanced and unbalanced three-phase systems based on the instantaneous power theory called instantaneous power theory with Fourier. Moreover, the optimal design of predictive current controller using an artificial intelligence technique called adaptive Tabu search is also proposed in the paper. These enhancements of the identification and current control parts are the aim of the good performance for shunt active power filter. The good results for harmonic mitigation using the proposed ideas in the paper are confirmed by the intensive simulation using SPS in SIMULINK. The simulation results show that the enhanced shunt active power filter can provide the minimum %THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) of source currents and unity power factor after compensation. In addition, the %THD also follows the IEEE Std.519-1992.

Power loss identification of three-phase induction motor using adaptive tabu search

This paper presents the power loss identification of the three-phase induction motor. The power losses are considered in the model of three-phase induction motor called the power loss model. The artificial intelligence approach called the adaptive tabu search is used for the power loss parameters identification. The results show that the proposed algorithm can identify the optimal values of the power loss model.

A controller design of more electric aircraft power systems using an adaptive Tabu search algorithm

This paper presents the optimal controller design for more electric aircraft power systems using an adaptive tabu search. The simple block diagrams are used as the objective function to evaluate the quality of each solution. The simulation results show that the proposed technique can provide the best output performance compared with those of conventional method. Moreover, this technique is very useful for engineers to design the controller with good performances.

The maximum power point tracking for stand-alone photovoltaic system using current based approach

This paper presents the maximum power point tracking for stand-alone photovoltaic system using current based technique. This method mitigates the disadvantage of conventional perturb and observe (P&O) technique in term of both transient and steady-state responses. The simulation results show that the proposed current based MPPT technique can provide the maximum power point value closed to the corresponding maximum power of photovoltaic for each irradiance. Both transient and steady state responses are better than those of conventional P&O technique.

Proportional plus resonant control for active power filter in unbalanced system

This paper presents the design approach of the proportional plus resonant control for active power filter in three-phase four-wire system. The hardware implementation is used to test the harmonic elimination using an active power filter. The experimental results confirm that the proportional plus resonant controller can provide good performance in dynamic load condition.
