SOA implementation critical success factors in healthcare

Purpose – Service oriented architecture (SOA) is increasingly adopted by many sectors, including healthcare. Due to the nature of healthcare systems, there is a need to increase SOA adoption success rates as the non‐integrated nature of healthcare systems is responsible for medical errors that cause the loss of tens of thousands of patients per year. Although numerous factors affect SOA success, these have not been explored and analysed yet, especially in the area of healthcare. This highlights a literature void and thus the purpose of this paper is to identify critical success factors (CSFs) influencing SOA implementation in healthcare.Design/methodology/approach – The authors critically review the literature and identify individual factors that may form CSFs for SOA implementation in healthcare. Is SOA a solution to Healthcare Information Systems interoperability

Healthcare organizations seek to provide services of high quality and profound safety through Healthcare Information Systems (HIS). Despite significant efforts that have been made, the lack of interoperability still affects the services provided to the patient and citizen (diagnosis, treatment, prescribing, and rehabilitation). In this paper we (a) propose a novel healthcare services classification, (b) discuss HIS as well as the problems related to them and (c) suggest that the implementation of Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) can increase the interoperability among systems and hence the quality of healthcare services.

Human Computer Interaction Research Through the Lens of a Bibliometric Analysis

Human Computing Interaction (HCI) is an expansive research field that covers various disciplines from computer science and engineering to human factors and social science. Navigating in this multidisciplinary field researchers and developers intensively seek to master the capability to understand the dialogue between humans and computers, reflect on the behaviour change caused by this interaction and encapsulate their knowledge to design, develop and maintain systems. Our paper aims to put in context and highlight the research done on the HCI field so far. To do so we choose a method that can provide a well-carved piece of literature and assure legitimacy in the representation of the research, i.e. a bibliometric analysis. Following this research path, we retrieved a data set of 962 publications covering the period from 1969 to early 2017. The analysis revealed a core set of forty-six articles structuring four main factors of HCI. Preliminary analysis highlights HCI design aspects, data management, user interaction, psychology and cognition and more recent trends in HCI in the workplace, sensors and wearables.

A Detailed Framework for SOA Governance

Service Oriented Architecture SOA Governance is a critical factor for the success of SOA implementations, yet a detailed SOA Governance framework is lacking. The paper reintroduces a conceptual SOA Governance framework in a healthcare setting. The proposed framework is based on a rigorous literature review and consist of nine governance elements that should be considered during the SOA practice. The identification and conceptualisation of the elements are grounded in the normative literature. Moreover, the authors propose a unique formulation combining nine elements of SOA Governance with SOA Critical Success Factors CSFs and Healthcare Information Systems HIS challenges. This proposal aims to pinpoint attributes and guidelines for each element, required to successfully govern SOA and tackle longstanding HIS challenges. The framework is intended to be used as a decision supporting tool for SOA governance in a healthcare setting.

Organizational structures during SOA implementation: the case of a Greek healthcare organization

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate service-oriented architecture organizational studies (SOA OS) in healthcare through a rigorous literature review, development and testing in an eGovernment health-care setting. The application of SOA paradigm to integrate information systems has been pursued mainly by private organizations. However, SOA starts to appear in the public agenda and specifically in health-care reengineering, as well. Recently, government strategies for eHealth have been slowly incorporating the SOA paradigm to integrate isolated systems, provide cost-effective solutions and expand the capabilities of their health-care information system. Yet, literature indicates that eHealth government strategies, including SOA, require the support of SOA OS to be successfully implemented. Governance of Service-Oriented Architecture in a Healthcare Organization: A Case Study

The article introduces a service-oriented architecture (SOA) governance framework for successful implementation in a healthcare organization. The proposed framework, based on a rigorous literature review, proposes nine governance elements that should be considered during the SOA implementation process. This proposal aims to pinpoint attributes and guidelines for each element required to successfully govern SOA and tackle longstanding healthcare information systems (HIS) implementation challenges. The framework was tested in a healthcare organization and valuable insights are presented herein. The intended use of this framework is as a decision-supporting tool for SOA governance in a healthcare setting.
