Manual of Deixis in Romance Languages

Deixis is a field of research that has generated increased interest among linguists. This volume provides an overview of deixis, focusing on Romance languages but also reaching beyond this perspective. The editors and authors hope that readers, regardless of their familiarity with Romance languages, will gain new insights into deixis in general, and into the similarities and differences between deictic structures among the languages of the world.

Anything goes? The gains and losses of the constructivist view on ethnicity: Some considerations based on German „language islands“ studies.

Sprachinseln leben von der „Grenze“, von ihrer Abgrenzbarkeit� Wenn die Grenze schwindet, gehen sie in der Flut unter� Was macht die Konstruktion der „Grenze“ stabil, was labil? Deutsche Sprachinseln in Russland und Brasilien zeigen gegenwärtig einen deutlichen Abbau der Sprachinselvarietäten und einen rapiden Sprachwechsel zur Mehrheitssprache� Dieser Abbau läuft allerdings keineswegs amorph, sondern geregelt ab und bewahrt Kernfunktionen, etwa in der Kasusmorphologie� Die sprachliche Entwicklung in den Sprachinseln ist weniger durch Konvergenzen aus den Kontaktsprachen und –varietäten geprägt, sondern folgt eher – unter starker Beschleunigung – dem auch im Binnendeutschen üblichen Sprachwandel� Es fragt sich daher, was diese dramatische Beschleunigung auslöst? Soziolinguistisch erweist sich als Motor des Wandels eine Auflösung von „Normativität“, von Normwissen und Normloyalität� Zweitsprachler des Deutschen überwiegen gegenüber Muttersprachlern; Code-mixing gewinnt an Boden gegenüber Code-switching, Zuwanderung stärkt die Kontaktsprache� Die Sprachinselvarietäten dienen immer weniger einem ethnischen „boundary marking“ (Barth 1969)� Der Konstruktion ethnischer Grenzen fehlen zunehmend die Ressourcen: Ethnische Grenzen diffundieren und die Sprachinseln geraten in Auflösung� „Untergehende“ Sprachinseln lassen nicht nur Sprachwandelprozesse wie im Labor erkennen, sondern vermitteln auch soziolinguistische und kulturanthropologische Erkenntnisse, worin die Konstruktion des ethnischen „boundary (un)marking“ besteht� Schlagworte: Sprachinseln, Sprachwandel, Morphologie, Ethnizität, boundary marking, Konstruktivismus

SummaryThis paper examines the use of demonstratives in spoken Spanish. People in the province of Toledo were observed how they use these terms in daily interaction. It can be shown that traditional deictical parameters, such as ›role‹ (speaker, addressee and third party) or physical distance, cannot fully explain the use of Spanish demonstratives. Special attention was given to the historical level of genre conventions or ›discourse traditions‹. Under a conceptual perspective, the options in the choice of a particular demonstrative reflect the continuum between spoken or written modes of language use, e.g. oral or literal modes.

SummaryThe act of reading aloud and interpreting at the same time characterizes the messenger/nuntius as an important person building a bridge between the alphabetized and the non-alphabetized parts of the semi-oral society. He does not only transcode the message from the literal to the oral code but above all he transforms the message according to the necessities of orality. The handing over of the documents and their interpretation in face of the pragmatic importance in the social context are called equally intimar. This cultural practice together with the magic aura of the text in its written form shows, that there are not really two different cultures, but only one. The semi-oral society has developped over the centuries in different ways to make sure that all people literate or not are able to participate in the discourses and texts representing different points on the scala from orality to literacy in their conceptual meaning.
