Self Archiving in Atılım University

Korhan Levent Ertürk; Gökhan Şengül

Self archiving is defined as storing the scientific research outputs in researchers’ own web pages/sites, organizational web sites or institutional repositories. In this study the self archiving activities of academicians of Atilim University are investigated. For the purpose of the study the web pages of the university, personal web pages of the academicians and open repository of the university are explored. We found the details of 2176 academic activities of the instructors in web pages. More than half of these activities (1147 - 53%) consist of refereed journal papers. Almost a quarter of the instructors saved their research outputs in the university’s open repository. Yet, those instructors have not published their works in their personal web pages or institutional web pages. Only 4% of the works are published in personal/organizational web pages. According to the results obtained, the usage of institutional repository is the common self archiving method in the Atilim University. On the other hand, the personal/organizational web pages should be as a point of attraction in self archiving. While discussing the efficient usage of the institutional repository, we suggest that the social networks as a meeting point should include links to personal/institutional web pages containing academicians’ papers.

Industry requires low-cost, low-power consumption, and autonomous remote sensing systems for detecting and identifying magnetic materials. Magnetic anomaly detection is one of the methods that meet these requirements. This paper aims to detect and identify magnetic materials by the use of magnetic anomalies of the Earths magnetic field created by some buried materials. A new measurement system that can determine the images of the upper surfaces of buried magnetic materials is developed. The system consists of a platform whose position is automatically controlled in x-axis and y-axis and a KMZ51 anisotropic magneto-resistive sensor assembly with 24 sensors mounted on the platform. A new identification system based on scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT)-binary robust invariant scalable keypoints (BRISKs) as keypoint and descriptor, respectively, is developed for identification by matching the similar images of magnetic anomalies. The results are compared by the conventional principal component analysis and neural net algorithms. On the six selected samples and the combinations of these samples, 100% correct classification rates were obtained.

Three-Dimensional Visualization with Large Data Sets: A Simulation of Spreading Cortical Depression in Human Brain

Korhan Levent Ertürk; Gökhan Şengül

We developed 3D simulation software of human organs/tissues; we developed a database to store the related data, a data management system to manage the created data, and a metadata system for the management of data. This approach provides two benefits: first of all the developed system does not require to keep the patients/subjects medical images on the system, providing less memory usage. Besides the system also provides 3D simulation and modification options, which will help clinicians to use necessary tools for visualization and modification operations. The developed system is tested in a case study, in which a 3D human brain model is created and simulated from 2D MRI images of a human brain, and we extended the 3D model to include the spreading cortical depression (SCD) wave front, which is an electrical phoneme that is believed to cause the migraine.

In this paper, a new magnetic measurement system is developed to determine upper surfaces of buried magnetic materials, particularly land mines. This measurement system uses the magnetic-anomaly-detection method. It also has intelligent identification software based on an image matching algorithm. It is aimed to determine and identify the buried ferromagnetic materials with minimum energy consumption. It is concentrated on the detection and identification of the shapes of upper surfaces of buried magnetic materials in dry and wet conditions. The effect of humidity in the detection process for detection is tested. In this paper, we used sensor images to identify various ferromagnetic materials and similar objects. Sensor images of soils at various humidities covering the objects were obtained. We used the speeded-up-feature-transform algorithm in the comparison process of the images. Dry soil sample images match with the corresponding wet soil samples with the highest matching rate. The images for different objects can easily be distinguished by the matching process.

The people who have physical or mental disabilities which limit their movements, senses, activities or both of them are one of the groups in society. Those people have various problems in social life directly or indirectly in Turkey. Nowadays, they face many problems in accessibility on many fields such as education, healthcare, justice, social security, etc. Those individuals are willing to draw attention and resolve their problems. The level of development of countries is directly related with the solution of the aforementined problems. In this study we focused on the common terms about the people who have limited movements, senses, activities or both; and focused on the awereness of disabled people and we investigated the the accessibility of the web sites about the justice by disabled people. Making accessible of web pages will allow the disabled people to have the equal rights with the others and will also provide diversity about information and communication sources
