A new method for calculating the frequency and power characteristics of different modes of a microwave metal-dielectric resonator has been proposed. The results of measurements of experimental specimens are presented that are in good agreement with calculation results. The relationships of the frequency and power characteristics of a resonator as a function of its geometrical and electrophysical parameters were obtained by using the method of partial regions. A high sensitivity of the main mode resonant frequency to the thickness of air inhomogeneity was detected. In this case the introduction of inhomogeneity increases the resonator Q-factor. Thus, the proposed design can be used as a high-Q tunable resonator.

Dependence of coupling coefficient between dielectric resonator (DR) and rectangular waveguide versus geometrical parameters and permittivity of material is discussed in this paper. The coupling coefficient was estimated in terms of scattering matrix approximation calculated by finite element method. The method of improvement of dielectric resonator coupling with rectangular waveguide is proposed. Such effect was achieved by insertion of dielectric discontinuity perpendicular to DRs electrical field. It results in increasing of attenuation in band–stop filters and decreasing of insertion loss in band-pass filters. Thermal stabilization method for resonant frequency of composite dielectric resonator is discussed.

The paper discusses quality factor of shielded cylindrical metal-dielectric resonator tuned by means of variable air gap between resonators base and shield. Mode matching technique was used to estimate resonators quality factor taking into account dielectric and metal losses. It was shown that metal and dielectric losses decrease in case of the air gap inclusion.

It was shown that both metal and dielectric losses decrease in case of the air gap inclusion. It was investigated that the dielectric loss has local minimum.

The research of the electromagnetic field distribution of the tunable shielded cylindrical metal-dielectric resonator was performed. The distribution of axial electric field in the resonator is presented. The external Q-factor and coupling coefficient were calculated for coupling loops of different shape and size.

The research of the thermal stability of the composite shielded cylindrical metal-dielectric resonator was performed. The sensitivities of resonant frequency to changes of resonator parameters are shown. The resulting temperature coefficient of resonant frequency is analyzed.

This paper presents a novel design of the cavity combline resonator. The resonator shows an extremely high sensitivity to the air gap thickness and high-Q performance. The design is well suited for electromechanical tuning. The results of the finite integration technique simulations are discussed. The influence of the resonator dimensions on the frequency tuning efficiency and the Q factor are presented.
