A FEW years ago1 we reported the result of an investigation on this subject. In spite of the fact that many workers have repeated the investigation, this important problem has not yet been completely solved. It is well known that the susceptibility of non-magnetic [metals is greatly affected by the presence of a very small amount of ferromagnetic impurity, and that this disturbing effect can be eliminated by measuring the susceptibility in different magnetic fields and by extrapolating these values to an infinite field.

IN districts of high latitudes, it is often found that the central portions of fine suspended water-drops remain unfrozen, even though the temperature of the water is cooled down to − 20° ∼ −30° C. This curious phenomenon can be explained by means of my theory of transformation stress; there is an outer spherical crust of ice and an inner water core, the freezing beginning from the outside and proceeding towards the centre. By applying this system of two spheres to the case of the freezing of water, we obtain for the mean intensity of pressure and for the depression of freezing point the following values: and .

As a result of an investigation on the change of temperature with magnetisation, Mr. T. Okamura has succeeded in separating the reversible and irreversible thermal effects. He has shown that the irreversible temperature variation agrees satisfactorily with the Honda-Okubo theory of ferromagnetism1.
