Optimum pond temperature for maximizing power production of a non-convecting solar pond heat-conversion system

Kouichi Kamiuto

In order to maximize the output from a non-convecting solar-pond powerplant, the optimum pond temperature and the corresponding final conversion efficiency are determined numerically for the meteorological conditions of Japan. In the analysis, the total depth of the pond is assumed to be 3 m, while the thickness of a non-convecting zone and the heat sink temperature of the power plant are varied. The optimum final conversion efficiency of the present non-convecting solar-pond thermal-energy conversion system is about half that of a convecting solar-pond power-plant.

Analytical and experimental study of a forced-convection type nocturnal radiator

Kouichi Kamiuto; Naoki Sase

An analytical model is developed to predict the nocturnal thermal performance of a forced-convection type nonselective radiator: its validity is examined by comparison of the predictions with the results of several outdoor experiments. In the experiments, the Reynolds number of a working fluid, which is water in the present study, is varied, while the inlet fluid temperature is kept constant. The presented model predicts time variations in the exit fluid temperature of the radiator accurately.
