The photoelectron spectra of trimethylgermane, chloro- and fluoro-trimethylgermane

John E. Drake; Boris M. Glavinc̆evski; Krystyna Gorzelska

Abstract The He(I) photoelectron spectra of the series Mein3GeX (X = F, Cl, H) is reported. Assignments are proposed based on comparisons with spectra of similar compounds and on semi-empirical CNDO/2 calculations. The He(II) spectra were used to resolve some ambiguities.

The photoelectron spectra of methylgermane, trifluoro- and trichloro-methylgermane

John E. Drake; Boris M. Glavinčevski; Krystyna Gorzelska

Abstract The He(I) and HE(II) photoelectron spectra of the series MeGeX 3 (X = H, F, Cl) are reported. Assignments are proposed based on comparison with spectra of similar compounds, particularly those of the Me 4 Ge and the GeX 4 series, and supported by semi-empirical CNDO/2 calculations. There is good correlation between -CNDO/2 and experimental ionisation energies. The expected de-stabilising effect arising from the introduction of a methyl group is particularly marked in the fluoride.

The photoelectron spectra of methyl(bromo)germanes

John E. Drake; Krystyna Gorzelska

Abstract He(I) and He(II) photoelectron spectra are reported for the series of bromides MeGeBr3, Me2GeBr2 and Me3GeBr. Assignments are based on semi-empirical CNDO/2 calculations, peak shapes and intensities. X-ray-excited spectra of the valence region were also utilized. Comparisons are drawn with the corresponding fluoride and chloride species.

Photoelectron spectra of trifluoromethyl(bromo)- and trifluoromethyl(chloro)-germanes (CF3)4-n, GeXn (X = Br, Cl; n = 1–3)

John E. Drake; Krystyna Gorzelska; Graham S. White; Reint Eujen

Abstract He(I) and He(II) photoelectron spectra of the series of compounds (CF3)4-nGeXn (X  Br, Cl; n = 1–3) are reported. Assignments are proposed on the basis of semi-empirical CNDO/2 calculations, band shapes, and changes of relative intensities between the He(I) and HE(II) spectra. Comparisons are drawn with the corresponding methyl series.

The photoelectkon spectra of several methylgermanium and perfluoromethylgermanium iodides

John E. Drake; Krystyna Gorzelska; Reint Eujen

Abstract He(I) photoelectron spectra are reported for the series of compounds (CH 3 ) 3 GeI, (CH 3 ) 2 GeHI, CH 3 GeH 2 I and (CH 3 ) 2 GeI 2 , as well as for (CF 3 ) 3 GeI, (CF 3 ) 2 GeI 2 and CF 3 GeI 3 . He(II) photoelectron spectra are also reported for all of the perfluoromethyl compounds. Assignments are proposed on the basis of semi-empirical CNDO/2 calculations, band shapes and changes of relative intensities between the He(I) and He(II) spectra. Comparisons are drawn with the related bromides and chlorides.

UV and X-ray-excited photoelectron spectra of trifluoromethylgermanes (CF3)4−nGeHn(n = 1–3)

John E. Drake; Krystyna Gorzelska; Reinhard Helbing; Reint Eujen

Abstract He(I), He(II) and X-ray-excited photoelectron spectra of the trifluoromethylgermanes (CF 3 ) 4− n GeH n ( n = 1–3) are reported. Assignments of the valence region are made on the basis of semi-empirical CNDO/2 calculations, comparisons with the spectra of related series of molecules, band shapes, and relative-intensity changes between features in the He(I) and He(II) spectra. Core-level binding energies are also compared with those of related species, and the usefulness of CNDO/2 and EESOP charge calculations is examined.
