Przemyslaw Makiewicz; Daniel Matias; Marek Jaskula; Marcin Biegun; Krzysztof Penkala; Ewa Mijowska; M. El Fray; Jacek Podolski

In the paper the results of research on accuracy analysis of measurements in electrochemical biosensing are presented. The scope of performed tests includes EIS (Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) and chronoamperometry, widely used for determination of glucose concentration. Measurement results obtained with two microcontroller systems, designed within a research project, and one reference platform (Autolab system, Metrohm, Netherlands) are compared and discussed. As a result, optimal design solutions may be chosen for microcontroller-based biomeasurement system. In glucosensing, promising results were obtained with the EIS technique in experiments performed using the Autolab system.

Visual evoked potentials in a diagnosis of a visual pathway dysfunction of a child with an arachnoid cyst

Joanna Karaśkiewicz; Wojciech Lubiński; Krzysztof Penkala

PurposeThe aim of this case report was to demonstrate the usefulness of the flash visual evoked potentials in monitoring the effects of intracranial hypertension in a preterm-born child with a congenital arachnoid cyst. Methods and resultsAt baseline, abnormalities were found in the right eye: exotropia and lack of foveal fixation. Visual acuity was not achieved. Pupillary responses were normal in both eyes. There was no evidence of nystagmus. Flash visual evoked potentials were normal and equal in both eyes. When repeated one year later the signal had deteriorated in both eyes; the peak times of N2 and P2 had increased. The increased VEP latencies were the only ocular signs noted. After referral to neurosurgery, intracranial hypertension was found and a shunt was performed.ConclusionsFlash visual evoked potentials may be a valuable test in monitoring patients with arachnoid cysts.

In the paper the results of research on electronic measurement and control systems designed for a multifunctional graphene-based biosensor are presented. Design of different types of biosensing electrodes based on graphene technology is discussed. Development of electronic circuits for read-out of the biosensor signals based on two microcontroller platforms (ATXmega128A1U and STM32F407) is described, including hardware and software design solutions. Comparison of measurement results using both prototype systems in electrochemical biosensing techniques (EIS - Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy) is also presented.

Lukasz Przenioslo; Michal Raczynski; Przemyslaw Makiewicz; Marcin Biegun; Daniel Matias; Andrzej Biedka; Krzysztof Penkala

In the paper the results of development of measurement instrument dedicated to electrochemical biosensing are presented. The document covers the most important aspects of the hardware and software solutions used with presented device. Sample measurement results using Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) method are also shown, in comparison with similar measurements made with commercially available, professional measurement system Autolab from Metro hm.

Krzysztof Penkala; Przemyslaw Makiewicz; Michal Raczynski; Lukasz Przenioslo; Daniel Matias; Marcin Biegun; Karolina Urbas; Malgorzata Aleksandrzak; Ryszard J. Kalenczuk; Ewa Mijowska; Peter Sobolewski; Miroslawa El Fray; Agnieszka Bartoszewska; Joanna Derkowska; Jacek Podolski

In this contribution the results on the development of a novel measurement system for electrochemical biosensing are presented. It covers the most important work on innovative graphene-based nanocomposites used in preparation of biosensing electrodes, design of different electrode types and a specialized flow chamber, specialized hardware and software for two versions (mobile and laboratory) of the electronic control and read-out system. The results of lab tests performed with the prototype system GruntMaster 6001 are shown in comparison to the measurements obtained by means of commercially available professional platforms used as a reference. The prototype is currently in the process of commercialization.

Simulation of Influence of the Exciting Sequence Parameters on Results of Spin Echo Method – Virtual Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Przemyslaw Makiewicz; Krzysztof Penkala

In the paper simulation of creating image in the spin echo MRI method is presented. On the basis of three images, with the contrast dependent on proton density and time constants (T1, T2), a model of the original object is created. With the use of this artificial (phantom) object, an image for any arbitrary chosen repetition time (TR) and echo time (TE) sequence parameters can be obtained. This Virtual Magnetic Resonance Imaging (VMRI) technique allows greatly improving medical diagnostic imaging based on the phenomena of magnetic resonance. It is also a useful aid in education.
