Abstract Online learning can be an effective tool in second-language acquisition (SLA) because it can be an efficient and convenient way to provide accurate, understandable material to second-language learners. It is crucial for instructors to have online knowledge and skills as well as the ability to choose how, when, and to whom to apply such expertise. Online learning also promotes student-centered learning, which is widely believed to be important in SLA. Online learning technologies also have the advantage of reducing learner anxiety by providing a nonjudgmental, independent learning environment. In addition, SLA students using online learning may develop improved attitudes toward the second language (L2) and its culture.
