In this paper, the design of a slotted rectangular microstrip patch antenna is reported which is suitable for high data rate application. The antenna is fed by a microstrip line designed for a frequency of 2.4 GHz. The designed antenna has inset feed over microstrip line feeding geometry. The dimension of the feed line is 7.64×14.89 mm. The microstrip antenna is designed over a FR4 epoxy substrate with dielectric constant, εΓ=4.4. The antenna is designed using high frequency structural simulator (HFSS) software with return loss of almost -40dB and VSWR 1 at 2.4 GHz providing a bandwidth of around 160 MHz.

In this paper, Inset Feed Slotted Rectangular Microstrip patch antenna using a metamaterial based Complementary Split Ring Resonator (CSRR) is designed for operating in dual band frequency range of 2.4–5.8 GHz. The microstrip antenna is designed over a FR4 epoxy substrate with an inset feed microstrip line geometry. To obtain desired dual band and radiation characteristics of the proposed antenna a CSRR is etched in the ground plane. The CSRR structure is used to obtain the dual band characteristics. The resonating frequency of the proposed design is suitable for Wide Local Area Network (WLAN) application. The proposed design is simulated in High Frequency Structural Simulator (HFSS) software. The return loss obtained for both the operating frequency is −26 dB.

The complementary split ring resonator (CSRR) is a widely used planar metamaterial structure in the design of microstrip antennas and other microstrip elements. In this work, a study has been made on converting a single band microstrip antenna into a dual band microstrip antenna by etching a CSRR structure from the ground plane below the patch. Initially, a simulation based study of the phenomenon is performed for a rectangular patch antenna. Then the same phenomenon is studied on an antenna of arbitrary shape. Using this approach, a 2.4 GHz antenna for IEEE 802.11 standard WLAN application has been designed, simulated and fabricated.

It has been found that resonating frequency of split ring resonator depends on its physical dimension of the split structure such as width, gap and radius. The best possible combinations of all such physical parameters provide the proper resonating frequency over which the metamaterial property of the structure can be obtained. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is found to be one of the popular solutions for optimization and prediction issues. In this paper, we report the development of an ANN based soft computational framework for designing a circular split ring resonator for wireless application. Here, a trained Multi Layered Perceptron (MLP) ANN is used for optimizing the best possible combination of physical dimension for determining the resonate behavior of a split ring resonator (SRR) for antenna design.
