3 Tbit/s (160 Gbit/s/spl times/19 channels) optical signal is successfully transmitted over 40 km dispersion-shifted fiber. Low noise supercontinuum signal pulse sources and 70 nm bandwidth tellurite-based optical amplifiers are used for 3 Tbit/s signal generation and amplification.

We report phase-transparent waveband conversion with polarization insensitivity based on second harmonic (SH) wave pumped difference frequency generation (DFG) using multiple-quasi-phase-matched LiNbO(3) (QPM-LN) waveguides. Flexible waveband conversion is demonstrated over the entire C-band using a tunable DFB-LD array (TLA) as a pump source for a multiple-QPM-LN waveguide. The penalty free waveband conversion of 43 Gb/s return-to-zero differential quadrature phase-shift-keying (RZ-DQPSK) waveband signals is successfully achieved.

Wavelength-tunable optical pulse sources with wide tuning range are desired both in fundamental experiments and in applications in practice. The tuning ranges and the pulse durations of output pulses are restricted by the luminescence spectra of the gain media. One of the most promising techniques is supercontinuum (SC) generation [1-3] by the propagation of intense narrow optical pulses in nonlinear media where more than 200-500nm spectra are easily obtained. So far, the SC generation has been reported with solid state lasers or dye lasers so far. Here, we have performed the first demonstration of supercontinuum generation by amplified gain-switched LD pulses and applied it to a tunable optical pulse source in the 1.5µm regime.

We describe the proof-of-concept demonstration of flexible chromatic dispersion compensation over the entire L-band region wavelength-division-multiplexing transparent networks operating at over 40 Gb/s using span-by-span compensation with an arrayed-waveguide grating and an liquid crystal on silicon-based multichannel tunable dispersion compensator.

We present over 120-nm-bandwidth optical elements; hybrid tellurite/silica fiber Raman post/inline amplifiers, a supercontinuum source, and an interleave filter. Using these elements, 124-nm-seamless bandwidth DWDM transmission (313 /spl times/ 10 Gbit/s, 160 km) is successfully conducted.

We demonstrate hybrid 40-Gb/s and 100-Gb/s PDM-QPSK DWDM transmission using real-time DSP in 580-km DSF-installed field testbed. The nonlinear crosstalk penalty due to the hybrid transmission of less than 0.5 dB is confirmed.

An all-optical multistage demultiplexer is proposed which enables 2/sup M/ time-division-multiplexed optical signals to be separately assigned to arbitrary output ports by logical permutations of M sets of optical control signals. Demultiplexing at 30 Gb/s was successfully demonstrated in a two-stage configuration composed of optical Kerr switches with two control inputs. The application of this device to various high-speed processing schemes is briefly discussed.<<ETX>>

Two-dimensional statistics and Q-penalty performance under the combination of two major impairments induced by polarization-dependent loss, namely level imbalance and loss of orthogonality between polarization-multiplexed tributaries, for a polarization-division-multiplexing digital coherent transmission at over 100-Gb/s are presented for the first time to estimate the outage probability needed for designing the system.

We demonstrate a technique for monitoring orthogonal polarization power ratio (OPPR) occurring in WDM polarization-multiplexed signals due to PDL. We employ low-frequency intensity tones to estimate the effect of PDL and level of OSNR.

Nearly transform-limited pulses with a temporal width of 744 fs were produced by compensating up to fourth order chirp in a supercontinuum lightwave by employing a tunable optical dispersion compensator based on liquid crystal on silicon and two arrayed-waveguide gratings.
