An excellent tridentate chelate compound for iron(II) ion, 2,3,5,6-(tetrapyridin-2-yl) pyrazine (2), was directly synthesized by aerial oxidation of a cobalt(II)-2-aminomethylpyridine complex. Oxidation pathways are also proposed.

Abstract 2-Aminomethylpyridine (1) readily reacted with Co(II) ion to give a chelate complex which reacted with oxygen to form, presumably, a μ-peroxodicobalt(III) complex or a Co(III)- (1) complex, and finally it was transformed to 2,3,5,6-tetra(2-pyridyl) pyrazine.

Abstract The reasons why borane is captured by aromatic 2-amino- N -heterocycles in water are described. The key intermediate is found to be a chelate complex which contains borane, an amine and a metal ion.
