We are witness to the communications revolution and the accompanying proliferation of narrow-purpose, mobile, computing and communication devices. Such devices tend to be smaller and lighter than their desktop and laptop counterparts. The tradeoff is that their displays and memory also tend to be relatively smaller. To date, they also rely on traditional English and/or icons for communicating with users. While icons have grown in usage, capturing any and all information using icons is impossible and/or prohibitively expensive. We examine the viability of developing new kinds of communication languages for such devices in a specific setting by considering an abstract classification task and examining the performance of subjects using a new, compact language that we have devised vis-a-vis written and spoken English. Our work draws on prior research on induced value experimentation and ex-ante system evaluation. In Part 1 of this two-part paper, we provide the necessary background, discuss the underlying motivations, and describe the construction and refinement of our experimental platform and an accompanying subject training software suite.

One of the most difficult problems that companies face when they use Internet recruiting is the volume of resumes that they may receive. This large volume of resumes along with the pressures to identify the best applicants have caused companies to use electronic scanning to sift through the resumes and identify those key words that may relate to the qualifications required for the job. Resumes that contain the desired words are selected for further evaluation while those that do not have these words are removed from the selection pool. As such, key word search (KWS) performs as a selection tool. This paper examines KWS as a selection tool and the strategies that can be used to improve its validity.

Previous studies have explored privacy instruments and disclosures as factors that affect on-line shopping intentions or attitudes. However, few have evaluated how information control affects this behavior. This paper draws on psychological and social justice theories to gain an understanding of how information control impacts on-line purchasing directly or indirectly through the mediation of intrinsic motivation. The resulting causal model was validated using structural equations with data from 179 respondents. Results show that perceived information control affects cognitive absorption, and users, as expected, value procedural fairness.
