In order to practically better cope with technical barriers to trade (TBT) of a great number of resin goods, our research presents first-ever results for the determination of Cd and Cr in acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) candidate reference material using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) recently recognized as a candidate primary ratio method with a particular attention to the estimation of involved measurement uncertainties.

Instrumental neutron activation analysis of mass fractions of toxic metals in plastic

Kwang-Won Park; Namgoo Kang

It is very challenging to decompose a plastic product for the purpose of analysis of hazardous elements contained. To circumvent such technical problem, it is imperative that an analyst employ a nondestructive analytical method free of any pretreatments. The analytical results of the concentrations of toxic metals such as Cd and Cr in polypropylene for seven samples at two different levels were obtained using the instrumental neutron activation analysis. This work was intended ultimately to establish certified reference materials (CRMs) of these metals in the polypropylene, traceable to the SI. The uncertainties associated with the analytical procedures were estimated in accordance with the ISO guideline. The results were subsequently validated by a comparison with those for CRM-680 and -681 of the Bureau Communautaire de Reference (BCR), which demonstrated acceptable agreement within their uncertainty ranges.

A radiochemical neutron activation analysis has been applied to 2N–4N grade titanium metal and its oxide. Twenty two impurities were separated in a group from scandium by a radiochemical separation method using cation exchange resin with HBr and HCl. The contents of the elements were calculated by a single comparator method using two monitors. The analytical results agree well within 10% deviation with those obtained by instrumental method. Eighteen elements, Na, Fe, Co, As, Se, Sr, Mo, Sb, La, Eu, Tb, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Th and U, are determined in titanium oxides and 17 elements, Na, Cr, Fe, Co, Se, As, Zr, Mo, Sb, Cs, Ce, Tb, Yb, Hf, Ta, W and Th, in titanium metals.

Interference in neutron activation analysis of rocks by uranium fission

Kwang-Won Park; Nak Bae Kim; H. J. Woo; Kil-Yong Lee; Yoon Yeol Yoon; J.H. Lee

Interferences by uranium fission for95Zr,99Mo,103Ru,140La,141Ce and147Nd have been studied using a single comparator method with two monitors. The effect of the neutron energy spectrum on the interference factor was examined by using the effective activation cross section. All the activities of140La produced during neutron irradiation of uranium were included in the calculation of the factor for lanthanum. The calculated and experimental interference factors are in good agreement within 10% deviation. The results have been applied for the analysis of several rock samples containing uranium in a wide concentration range.

Instrumental neutron activation analysis was used for the analysis of 25 trace elements in airborne particulate matter (PM) for air pollution monitoring. For the collection of air samples, the Gent stacked filter unit low volume sampler and two types of Nuclepore polycarbonate filters were employed. Samples were collected at selected sampling dates in suburban and industrial regions of Daejon city in the Republic of Korea. Mass concentrations and black carbon of PM were measured, and enrichment factors were calculated. The results were used to describe the emission sources and their correlation patterns.

Kwang-Won Park; Nak Bae Kim; H. J. Woo; Kil-Yong Lee; Yoon Yeol Yoon; Wan Hong

A radiochemical separation method using an anion exchange resin has been applied to 3N grade Nb for determining nine impurity elements. Five elements (Cr, Fe, Co, Zn and Se) were separated in 2M HF, three elements (Mo, W and Hf) in 32M HF, Nb in 0.5M HF/3M HCl, and Ta in 1M NH4F/4M NH4CCl. The contents of the elements were calculated by a single comparator method using two monitors of Au and Co. The main impurity was revealed to be Ta with a content of over 160 ppm.

Instrumental neutron activation analysis of silicon wafers using the silicon matrix as the comparator

Nak Bae Kim; H. W. Choi; S. K. Chun; S. Y. Cho; H. J. Woo; Kwang-Won Park

For the instrumental neutron activation analysis of trace impurities in high purity silicon wafer, a modified single comparator method has been applied. The energy distribution of the neutrons at the irradiation position was measured using the two flux monitors, Au and Co, and elemental contents were calculated using the silicon matrix in the wafer as a comparator. This has advantage of reducing the cross contamination from an external monitor during sample preparation and irradiation, the uncertainties from the non-homogeneity of the neutron flux and the error on the weight of comparators. Determination limits for 49 elements were presented under the condition of 72 hours irradiation at a neutron flux of 3.7·1013 n·cm-2·s-1 and 4000 s measurement. The analytical results obtained by this method and the conventional single comparator method were compared and were found to agree well within 5%.
