The handbook of design management

Richard Buchanan; Richard Boland; Kyung-won Chung; Rachel Cooper; Sabine Junginger; Thomas Lockwood

The management of design has emerged as central to the operational and strategic options of any successful organization. The Handbook of Design Management presents a state of the art overview of the subject - its methodologies, current debates, history and future. The Handbook covers the breadth of principles, methods and practices that shape design management across the different design disciplines. These theories and practices reach from the operational to the strategic, from the product to the organization. Bringing together leading international scholars, the Handbook provides a guide to the latest research in the field. It also documents the shifts that have been taking place both in management and in design which have highlighted the value of design thinking and design education to organizations. Presenting the first systematic overview of the subject - and offering a wide range of examples, insights and analysis - the Handbook is an invaluable resource for researchers and students in design and management as well as for design practitioners and professional managers.

Applying Sasang Typology Theory to Robot Appearance Design

Whan Oh Sung; Min Jeong Song; Kyung-won Chung

The concordance between physical appearance and personality to build appropriate images of the robot becomes a critical issue, however, there are few studies concerning integrated approaches toward this interrelationship. This research aims to identify such interrelationship based on the Korean traditional Sasang typology theory which classifies people into four distinctive types in relation to personalities, appearances, and susceptibilities in certain diseases. Through an intensive web-survey, a comprehensive robot identity map w as created. From the correlation analysis, strong correlations between robot physique characteristics and perceived Sasang personality images were found. Interestingly, robot Sasang types and theoretical Sasang types show ed a strong relationship and follow the general tendency of the theory. From the map, several design implications were generated and discussed. It is hoped that these findings can help not only industrial designers to find a design clue at the beginning stage of design process, but also multi-disciplinary experts and professionals to share consensus images of robot during the development process.

Reflections on Design Excellence through International Product Design Award Schemes

Whan Oh Sung; Kyung-won Chung; Ki-Young Nam

ABSTRACT This paper examines international product design award schemes to identify the relationship between successful manufacturers in design award schemes and their corporate design competitiveness. Four international product design award schemes – the International Design Excellence Award (IDEA), iF Product Design, Red Dot Product Design and Japanese Good Design Award (JGDA) – were selected from a group of 22 potential schemes. The awards were comparatively reviewed in detail, and the inter-dynamics of the benefits of the award schemes were discussed. In order to reveal the true value of winning awards in reflecting corporate design excellence, a new qualitative analysis method that takes into consideration the selectiveness of different awards was developed. The results from the qualitative analysis challenge the popular belief of simply regarding the number of awards won as corporate design excellence. The design excellence of the award winners were re-ranked according to the new method developed through this research. The findings of the research suggest that this could be a truer reflection of reality.

Organizational Conditions Supporting Design Function: South Korea in Reflection of Japan

Yeunyoung Kwon; Yosuke Kanno; Ki-Young Nam; Satoshi Shibata; Kyung-won Chung

Abstract This research addresses effective ways of managing corporate design function through appropriate sets of organizational conditions, which in turn determine the types of design functions. The three types of design functions – Leader, Collaborator, and Implementer – were established through cluster analysis of survey data, with further in-depth analysis to identify the determinants of the types. Qualitative post-survey interviews were conducted to discover the underlying reasons for insightful phenomena. The research established that different levels of design excellence were associated with different types of design functions, and that the general consumer, as an end user, was a significant determinant of the types. The findings suggest that a given type can also be the result of a strategic choice as well as a company’s capability for design. The scope of the design activities and leadership style were found to be important factors in organizational conditions for the company’s capability to achieve design excellence.
