On singularity of a nonlinear variational sine-Gordon equation

Kyungwoo Song

Abstract We study a sine-Gordon-type of nonlinear variational wave equation whose wave speed is a sinusoidal function of the wave amplitude. This equation arises naturally from long waves on a dipole chain in the continuum limit, which provides a crude model for some polymers. Using characteristic methods, we describe a blow-up result for the one-dimensional nonlinear variational sine-Gordon equation, which shows that smooth solutions breakdown in finite time.

The Regularity of Semihyperbolic Patches Near Sonic Lines for The 2-D Euler System in Gas Dynamics

Kyungwoo Song; Qin Wang; Yuxi Zheng

We study the regularity of semihyperbolic patches of self-similar solutions near sonic lines to a Riemann problem for the two-dimensional (2-D) Euler system. As a result, it is verified that there exists a global solution in the semihyperbolic patch up to the sonic boundary and that the sonic boundary has

-regularity. The study of the semihyperbolic patches of solutions for the Euler system was initiated by Li and Zheng [Arch. Rational Mech. Anal., 201 (2011), pp. 1069--1096]. This type of solution appears in the transonic flow over an airfoil and Guderley reflection and is common in the numerical configurations of 2-D Riemann problems.

RADIAL SYMMETRY OF TOPOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS IN THE SELF-DUAL MAXWELL-CHERN-SIMONS GAUGED O(3) SIGMA MODEL

Kyungwoo Song

In this paper we consider a Riemann problem, in particular, the case of the presence of the semi-hyperbolic patches arising from a transonic shock in simple waves interaction. Under this circumstance, we construct global solutions of the two-dimensional Riemann problem of the pressure gradient system. We approach the problem as a Goursat boundary value problem and a mixed initial-boundary value problem, where one of the boundaries is the transonic shock.

NONRELATIVISTIC LIMIT IN THE SELF-DUAL ABELIAN CHERN-SIMONS MODEL

Jongmin Han; Kyungwoo Song

Vanishing pressure limits of Riemann solutions to relativistic Euler system for Chaplygin gas are identified and analyzed in detail. Unlike the polytropic or barotropic gas case, as the parameter decreases to a critical value, the two-shock solution converges firstly to a delta shock wave solution to the same system. It is shown that, as the parameter decreases, the strength of the delta shock increases. Then as the pressure vanishes ultimately, the solution is nothing but the delta shock wave solution to the zero pressure relativistic Euler system. Meanwhile, the two-rarefaction wave solution and the solution containing one-rarefaction wave and one-shock wave tend to the vacuum solution and the contact discontinuity solution to the zero pressure relativistic Euler system, respectively.

Energy conservative solutions to the system of full variational sine-Gordon equations in a unit sphere

Qin Wang; Kyungwoo Song

Using the moving plane method, we establish the radial symmetry of topological one-vortex solutions of a semilinear elliptic system arising from the self-dual Maxwell-Chern-Simons O(3) model.

SELF-SIMILAR SOLUTIONS FOR THE 2-D BURGERS SYSTEM IN INFINITE SUBSONIC CHANNELS

Kyungwoo Song

We consider the nonrelativistic limit in the self-dual Abelian Chern-Simons model, and give a rigorous proof of the limit for the radial solutions to the self-dual equations with the nontopological boundary condition when there is only one-vortex point. By keeping the shooting constant of radial solutions to be fixed, we establish the convergence of radial solutions in the nonrelativistic limit.

Semi-Hyperbolic Patches of Solutions of the Pressure Gradient System

Kyungwoo Song; Yuxi Zheng

We establish the global existence of a conservative weak solution to the Cauchy problem for a complete system of variational sine-Gordon equations, which models the motion of long waves on a neutral dipole chain in the continuum limit in a unit sphere. Although singularities may develop in finite time, the energy of the solution is conserved across singular times. We also obtain the continuous dependence of solutions on the given initial data.

Transonic nozzle flows and free boundary problems for the full Euler equations

Gui-Qiang Chen; Jun Chen; Kyungwoo Song

We establish the existence of weak solutions in an infinite subsonic channel in the self-similar plane to the two-dimensional Burgers system. We consider a boundary value problem in a fixed domain such that a part of the domain is degenerate, and the system becomes a second order elliptic equation in the channel. The problem is motivated by the study of the weak shock reflection problem and 2-D Riemann problems. The two-dimensional Burgers system is obtained through an asymptotic reduction of the 2-D full Euler equations to study weak shock reflection by a ramp.
