Abstract The monoclinic BiB3O6 (abbreviation BIBO hereafter) (space group C2 [1] ) has been grown from stoichiometric melts in single crystals of dimensions up to 5×4×2 centimeters in optical quality. We have determined all independent nonlinear optical (nlo) coefficients of second harmonic generation dijkSHG for the fundamental λ0=1079.5 nm. The complete determination of a dijkSHG tensor in crystals of monoclinic or lower symmetry has not been published to our knowlegde yet. Linear optical investigations indicate a wide range of wavelengths for phase matchable processes. The highest deff we found along the phase matched direction of second harmonic generation at 1079.5 nm is 3.2 pm/V. This value is larger than that of many other substances, such as KTiOPO4 (KTP) or β−BaB2O4 (BBO), being widely used in applications.

Refractive indices were determined of single crystals of La 3 Ga 3 SiO 14 (langasite, LGS), La 3 Ga 5.5 Nb 0.5 O 14 (langanite, LGN) and La 3 Ga 5.5 Ta 0.5 O 14 (langataite, LGT) in the wavelength region between 0.36 μm and 2.33 μm. While phase-matched optical second harmonic generation is not possible in LGS it occurs in the isotypic compounds LGN and LGT. Temperature-dependent examination of the dielectric properties of LGS up to 600°C showed anomalous behaviour. For all three substances the electro-optic [r σ ijk ] (unclamped) and the piezoelectric [d ijk ] tensors were determined at room temperature. In addition, the temperature-dependence of these properties was studied for LGS between -200°C and +200°C by a Jamin interferometer in combination with a modified Senarmont compensator.

Abstract Efficient multiple stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) and other χ (3) and χ (2) nonlinear effects in monoclinic BiB 3 O 6 crystal were observed under picosecond excitation. The majority of measured Raman laser wavelengths in the near-IR and visible are identified and attributed to the SRS-active vibration modes of bismuth triborate. We classify the BiB 3 O 6 acentric compound as promising media for Raman laser converters.
