The electron-impact mass spectra of a series of specifically deuterated n-octadecyl benzoates define the positions from which hydrogen atom migration occurs in the reaction paths leading to C18H36⨥ and C7H7O2. The migration step in the path leading to C18H36⨥ and the first of the two migration steps in that leading to C7H7O2 appear to be one and the same, occurring from carbons 1 to 7, with the maximum contribution from C-3. The second migration step in the path leading to C7H7O2+ appears to occur nonselectively from all positions in the octadecyl group.
