Electrostatic Generator for Nuclear Research at M.I.T.

L. C. Van Atta; D. L. Northrup; R. J. Van de Graaff; C. M. Van Atta

The electrostatic generator previously located at Round Hill has been transferred to the M.I.T. grounds in Cambridge. The present generator construction and also a high voltage accelerating tube mounted vertically in one of the columns are described. An account is given of experience with the acceleration of positive ion and electron beams and with the x‐ray bombardment of indium, beryllium, and deuterium.

The Construction and Cooling of Large Vapor Traps

D. L. Northrup; C. M. Van Atta; L. C. Van Atta

A description is given of a simple and efficient baffle system which results in a vapor trap of high conductance for permanent gas. Two methods for maintaining the temperature of the trap in the range −50° to −80°C are described, one designed for intermittent and one for continuous operation. Measured conductances and over‐all performance characteristics are given.

Use of Corona Gaps in High Voltage Work

L. C. Van Atta; W. B. Nowak

The several applications of corona gaps to high voltage work require current‐voltage curves having somewhat different shapes. Data are presented to show how the characteristic curve of a corona gap depends upon polarity, gap length, electrode shape, and combined linear resistance. The selection of the proper corona gaps for various applications is discussed.

Progress Report on the Electrostatic High-Voltage Generator at Round Hill

L. C. Van Atta; E. W. Samson; R. J. Van de Graaf

Preliminary trials have been made with one of the two units comprising the electrostatic high-voltage generator at Round Hill (Phys. Rev. 43, 149, 1933).
