Effects of roughage source, amount, and particle size on behavior and gastrointestinal health of veal calves

The European Union 1997 Directive, stipulating that veal calves should be fed a minimum of 50 to 250 g of fibrous feed from 8 to 20 wk of age, is vague. A fibrous feed ration maximum of 250 g has been implicated in welfare issues, namely the occurrence of abnormal oral behaviors and poor gastrointestinal health. Past research suggests that this amount is insufficient to prevent the development of abnormal oral behaviors and enabling good rumen development. Different sources and particle sizes of roughage could lead to very different welfare outcomes. In a 3×2 × 2 factorial design, 240 group-housed calves (10±1 d; 46.1±0.1 kg) were fed different roughage sources (straw, maize silage, or maize cob silage; the latter 2 were dried and provided no extra moisture compared with straw) in 2 amounts (250 or 500 g of dry matter per day), and 2 particle sizes (chopped or ground). Roughage was supplemented to milk replacer (MR) from 2 wk after arrival. In addition, 60 calves were fed 1 of 3 additional control treatments: MR only (n=20), MR plus an iron supplement (n=20), or MR plus ad libitum hay (n=20). Oral behaviors were recorded using instantaneous scan sampling at 2-min intervals for 2 h in 3 periods per day, at 12 and 22 wk of age. Calves were slaughtered at 24 wk of age and rumen and abomasal health parameters were recorded. Limited provision of straw resulted in behavior comparable with that from unlimited provision of hay, with reduced tongue playing and oral manipulation of the environment, as well as increased chewing compared with diets with no roughage supplement. Straw prevented ruminal hairballs, but impaired rumen development and increased abomasal damage. A higher ration of roughage increased chewing (12 wk), decreased oral manipulation of the trough (12 and 22 wk) and the pen (22 wk), and increased rumen weight. However, more roughage led to increased abomasal damage for certain parameters. Longer feed particles had no obvious benefits for behavior, but decreased hairball prevalence. Overall, unlimited hay had the highest benefit for both behavior and gastrointestinal health. Adding iron to the MR did not alter behavior or gastrointestinal health compared with MR without iron supplement. This study demonstrated that different roughage sources, amounts, and particle sizes have different effects on veal calf behavior and gastrointestinal health, and hence on veal calf welfare.

The role of solid feed amount and composition and of milk replacer supply in veal calf welfare

Diets used in veal production were linked with welfare problems: that is, behavioral and gastrointestinal health disorders. This study aimed to determine how indicators of calf welfare, that is, behavior and some characteristics of the feces reflecting gastrointestinal health status, are affected by (1) different amounts and compositions of solid feed (SF), (2) the addition of ad libitum long straw to a typical veal diet, and (3) milk replacer (MR) being fed via automated milk dispensers (AMD). Two-week-old Holstein-Friesian bull calves (n=270) were used in this study. In a 4×2 factorial design, 32 pens (5 calves per pen) were allocated to different levels of SF (SF1, SF2, SF3, or SF4) and roughage-to-concentrate ratios (20:80 or 50:50). The experimental period (13 to 29wk of age) was preceded by an adaptation period (3 to 12wk of age). Targeted total dry matter (DM) intake from SF during the experimental period was 20 kg of DM for SF1, 100 kg of DM for SF2, 180 kg of DM for SF3, and 260 kg of DM for SF4. The roughage part of the SF was 50% maize silage and 50% chopped wheat straw (on a DM basis). Ten additional pens were allocated to 2 treatments with ad libitum SF, with either (1) SF components in separate troughs (SEP) or (2) SF components mixed, with the composition being equal to the choice of SEP calves in the preceding week (MIX). Another 4 pens were fitted with racks filled with long wheat straw (STR) and fed SF2 with a roughage-to-concentrate ratio of 20:80. All the aforementioned pens received MR in buckets. Finally, 8 pens were allocated to 1 of 2 SF levels: SF1 or SF2 (with a roughage-to-concentrate ratio of 50:50) and fed MR via an AMD. Milk replacer provision was adjusted every 2wk to achieve similar rates of carcass gain across treatments (excluding SEP, MIX, and STR). Behavior was recorded at 15 and 24wk using instantaneous scan sampling. The prevalence of diarrhea and clay-like feces, which signal ruminal drinking, was monitored at 14 and 25wk. More roughage, but not concentrate, increased rumination and decreased tongue playing. The STR calves had higher rumination and lower abnormal behavior levels compared with calves without ad libitum straw. Offering MR via an AMD reduced tongue playing at 15wk. Tongue playing frequency was related to both roughage amount and AMD feeding, suggesting 2 separate motivations (i.e., rumination and sucking) underlying the development of this behavior. Only SF amount affected aspects of feces: SF1 calves had the highest diarrhea incidence. No effect of diet was found on clay-like feces.

Natural (auto)antibodies in calves are affected by age and diet

Background: Natural autoantibodies (N(a)ab) were found in every species tested so far, and are likely important in maintaining homeostasis. Objectives: (1) To determine N(a)ab in Bos taurus calves, (2) evaluate effects of diet and age on N(a)ab binding repertoires in calves, and (3) delineate bovine liver cell lysate (BLL) antigens related with variation in rumen score and body weight. Animals and methods: Effects of age and diet on staining of BLL fragments by IgM and IgG antibodies in serum samples collected at 20 or at 26 weeks of age from bull calves either fed a restricted or ad libitum diet were analyzed using quantitative Western blotting. Correlations between fragments stained and grouping of calves were done by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Redundancy analysis (RDA) was done to relate rumen score and body weight variation at slaughter at 27 weeks of age with stained BLL fragments. Results: In sera from all calves IgM and IgG antibodies binding BLL antigens were found. Corresponding fragments were stained, but quantitative differences in staining intensities were related to diet and age for both IgM and IgG. PCA revealed that age had a greater influence than diet on BLL fragment staining. RDA suggested that staining by IgM or IgG of specific BLL fragments was related with variation in rumen score and body weight. Conclusions and clinical importance: Analyses of N(a)ab in serum could be a potential tool to estimate the health status of cattle, and be used to evaluate effects of husbandry practices.

Understanding oral stereotypies in calves : alternative strategies, hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis (re)activity and gene by environment interactions

Stereotypies are used as indicators of poor animal welfare and it is, therefore, important to understand underlying factors mediating their development. In calves, two oral stereotypies, that is, tongue playing and object manipulation, result mostly from insufficient structure in the diet. Three hypotheses were studied: (1) oral stereotypies in calves are one of two alternative strategies, the alternative being hypo-activity; (2) stereotyping and non-stereotyping calves differ in terms of cortisol secretion; (3) oral stereotypy development in calves rests on a gene by environment interaction. Eight-week-old bull calves (n=48) were assigned to one of four solid feed allowances (0, 9, 18 or 27 g dry matter/kg metabolic weight per day) with the following composition: 50% concentrate, 25% maize silage and 25% straw on dry matter basis. The calves received milk replacer in buckets, the provision of which was adjusted to achieve equal growth rates. At 14 to 18 weeks of age, calves were exposed to a challenge, that is, tethering inside cages. Oral stereotypies and inactivity were recorded in the home pens in the 4 weeks before the challenge using instantaneous scan sampling. Salivary cortisol levels were measured at -120, +40, +80, +120 min and +48 h relative to the challenge. Individual differences in behaviour were recorded in the first 30 min after challenge implementation using focal animal sampling and continuous recording, and these elements were entered into a principal component (PC) analysis to extract PCs. Regression analyses were performed to find relationships between stereotypies and inactivity, stereotypies and cortisol, and stereotypies and PCs (individual differences, genes) and solid feed (environment). Relationships between PCs and cortisol were also investigated to help with the interpretation of PCs. Hypotheses 1 and 2 were rejected. Hypothesis 3, however, was supported: calves with a zero solid feed allowance, that is, in the most barren environment, showed links between stereotypies and two of the PCs. Calves that displayed high levels of idle and rapid locomotion and low levels of oral contact with the cage during the challenge also displayed high levels of object manipulation in the home pens. Calves that displayed low levels of stepping and turning attempts during the challenge also displayed high levels of tongue playing in the home pens. This study corroborates the gene by environment interaction on the development of oral stereotypies in calves.

What is animal happiness?: What is animal happiness?

Today, we see a growing concern for the quality of life of nonhuman animals and an accompanying call for viable means of assessing how well animals thrive. Past research focused on minimizing negatives such as stress, while more recent endeavors strive to promote positives such as happiness. But what is animal happiness? Although often mentioned, the term lacks a clear definition. With recent advances in the study of animal emotion, current interest into positive rather than negative experiences, and the call for captive and domesticated animals to have good lives, the time is ripe to examine the concept of animal happiness. We draw from the human and animal literature to delineate a concept of animal happiness and propose how to assess it. We argue that animal happiness depends on how an individual feels generally—that is, a typical level of affect.

How do different amounts of solid feed in the diet affect the behaviour and welfare of veal calves

Maternal abilities and piglet vitality were analyzed on 24 Meishan (MS) and 24 Large White (LW) gilts. Females were inseminated with a mixture of semen from both breeds. Three MS and 3 LW boars were used to constitute 3 duos formed by mixing of MS and LW semen in equal proportions. Farrowing events were studied over 5 successive batches. The proportion of purebred and crossbred piglets within the litter varied according to the duo used and the dam breed (p<0.01). The average within-litter percentage of purebred piglets in LW and MS sows was respectively 43% and 50% with use of duo 1, 64% and 23% with duo 2 and 69% and 81% with duo 3. Gestation was shorter in MS than in LW sows (111.6 vs 114.0 days; p<0.05) and litter size tended to be larger in LW than in MS sows (14.6 vs 12.8 total born piglets; p=0.08). Over the three first days of lactation, piglet probability of survival was similar between purebred and crossbred piglets born from LW sows (94.5% vs 95.0%) and higher in purebred than crossbred piglets born from MS sows (96.6% vs 98.7%, p<0.05). In LW sows, crossbred piglets were heavier at birth and more reactive in a novel environment than purebred piglets (1.29 vs 1.21 kg, p<0.10; reactivity score: 1.38 vs 1.03 respectively). In MS sows, purebred piglets had a lower birth weight than crossbred piglets but showed similar vitality (0.86 vs 1.08 kg, p<0.001; reactivity score: 1.00 vs 1.03). Birth process and piglet behavior in early lactation will be analyzed to estimate the interaction between dam breed and piglet genetic type (purebred vs crossbred) on the expression of maternal behavior and piglet vitality (udder activity and survival).Young horses normally live in small year-round stable groups including one stallion, their mothers, a few other mares, their siblings and unrelated peers. On the contrary, most of young domestic horses are generally maintained in same-age and same-sex groups from weaning until training. One has to consider that the absence of adult partners during ontogeny may be a source of behavioral disorders. In a first study, we focused on social conditions at weaning. While it is well known that presence of peers is of high importance to alleviate weaning stress, we investigated here the effects of the introduction of unrelated adult mares in groups of weanlings. Results showed that signs of stress were less pronounced and shorter in time in weanlings housed with adult mares than in weanlings kept in same-age groups (e.g. distress vocalizations: P<0.05; salivary cortisol: P<0.05). Besides, only foals deprived of adult presence exhibited increased aggressiveness towards peers (P<0.05) and abnormal behaviors (P<0.05). In conclusion, the presence of two unrelated adults in groups of weanlings not only alleviated weaning stress, but also favored positive social behavior and limited the emergence of abnormal behaviors. In a second study, we examined the impact of the temporary presence of adult horses on the behavior of 1- and 2-year-old horses. Results showed that young horses reared in homogeneous groups had a reduced behavioral repertoire, no real preferred partner and displayed many agonistic interactions compared to domestic horses reared under more natural conditions. Interestingly, after the introduction of adults, young horses expressed new behaviors (e.g. snapping, lying recumbent), preferential social associations emerged (P<0.05) and positive social behavior increased (P<0.05). Taken together, these results have important implications in terms of husbandry, indicating the importance of keeping young horses with adults.The aim of this work was to characterise the European consumer of pig meat (within ALCASDE project). A total of 822 respondents participated in a survey that was carried out Germany (DE n=132), Spain (ES n=133), France (FR n=139), Italy (IT n=140), Netherlands (NL n=132) and United Kingdom (UK n=146). All of them were selected for consuming pork > 1 time/month and stratified by age and gender, within each country profile. Respondents answered socio-demographic questions and frequency of consumption of different pork products, the most common purchasing place for fresh pork meat, if they were responsible for buying fresh pork at home, if they were responsible for cooking at home, and if they usually eat the pork with the fat. Data was analysed with FREQ procedure of SAS software. In general, over ninety percent of consumers ate fresh pork > 2 times/week (DE 96.2 %; ES 95.5 %; IT 92.9 %; NL 93.9 %; UK 97.3 %) except for FR (34.8 %). The most consumed product was the sausage in DE, dry cured ham in ES and IT; cooked ham in FR, mince meat in NL and sliced bacon in UK. In all the countries, the supermarket was the most common purchasing place of fresh pork with the exception of NL, where it was the traditional market. In general, the percentage of respondents responsible for buying fresh pork in their household was 91.0 %. In all countries, women were more responsible for buying fresh pork than men, and they were mostly between 41-60 years old. Ninety-one percent of respondents were partially responsible for cooking at home. Women were more responsible for cooking at home than men. France was an exception, where 49.6 % women and 50.4 % men cooked at home. Considering all respondents, 44.5 % ate the pork with the fat in all the countries (35.4 % of women and 54.6 % of men). The study showed differences among countries regarding respondents’ traits.
