A novel all-optical bit-error monitoring system is demonstrated by cascading two all-optical logic gates: an inverted wavelength converter and an optical NOR gate which are realized using injection-locked laser diodes operating at different thresholds. Real-time optical monitoring signal is generated which indicates the positions and duration of both bit and burst errors in 10-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero signals.

Error-free all-optical packet switching is demonstrated by use of a multiwavelength mutual injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diode. A 10-Gbit/s data signal is switched on and off with an extinction ratio of 16.9 dB when an optical control signal is turned off and on with a power difference of only 3 dB.

We have demonstrated all-optical packet add-drop for all-optical packet-switched networks. Intelligent all-optical add-drop of packets is performed, based on all-optical processing of packet headers. The header and payload rates are 5 and 10 Gbits/s, respectively.

All-optical waveform reshaping of a distorted 10-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) pseudorandom bit sequence (PRBS) signal using two-mode injection locking in Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) was demonstrated. Simultaneous waveform reshaping of two 10-Gb/s distorted NRZ PRBS signals using a single FP-LD was also demonstrated.

We demonstrated a 10-GHz all-optical clock recovery system using an erbium-doped fiber laser that incorporates an electroabsorption modulator and a linear optical amplifier. Stable pulses with peak power of 200 mW and pulsewidth of 6 ps are obtained. The output power and the pulsewidth of the recovered clock pulses are independent of the input data pattern. Stable optical clock can still be observed when the input data rate varies by more than 60% of the fundamental frequency without any optical tunable delay line inside the laser cavity. The scheme is essentially wavelength transparent for the whole C-band which recovers clock pulses from input data wavelength between 1525 and 1565 nm

All-optical on/off switch is demonstrated using multi-wavelength injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diode. A 10 Gb/s data signal is switched on and off with an extinction ratio of -16 dB measured in spectrum domain by an optical control signal.

We demonstrate a 1/spl times/4 10 Gb/s all-optical packet switch with all-optical header processing and 2R regeneration using injection-locked Fabry-Perot lasers diodes. The header and payload rates are 5 Gb/s and 10 Gb/s respectively.
