After the failure of the free trade area negotiations in the OEEC at the end of 1958, the industrial federations of the countries that are now members of EFTA, suggested that a free trade zone be established between those countries that remained outside the European Communities. Government officials of these seven countries met at Saltsjobaden near Stockholm in June 1959 to draw up a draft plan for a European Free Trade Association. At a ministerial meeting the following month it was recommended to the respective Governments that such an Association be set up (Communique of 21 July). Negotiations for a Convention were completed by November 1959 (Resolution of 20 November), and the Convention establishing the European Free Trade Association was signed at Stockholm on 4 January 1960. It came into force on 3 May 1960.

Aims The Common Market Law Review is designed to function as a medium for the understanding and analysis of European Union Law, and for the dissemination of legal thinking on all matters of European Union Law. It thus aims to meet the needs of both the academic and the practitioner. For practical reasons, English is used as the language of communication. Editorial policy The editors will consider for publication manuscripts by contributors from any country. Articles will be subjected to a review procedure. The author should ensure that the significance of the contribution will be apparent also to readers outside the specific expertise. Special terms and abbreviations should be clearly defined in the text or notes. Accepted manuscripts will be edited, if necessary, to improve the general effectiveness of communication. If editing should be extensive, with a consequent danger of altering the meaning, the manuscript will be returned to the author for approval before type is set. Submission of manuscripts

The specialised agencies are autonomous international organisations. They stand, however in a special relationship to the United Nations, which distinguishes them from other international organisations.

The idea of a Scandinavian parliamentary council dates back to 1938, but it was not until 3 December 1951 that, following preparatory work by the Northern Interparliamentary Union, the Statute of the Nordic Council was drafted. Subsequently, it was enacted in identical form by the Parliament of each Member State. The Statute came into force [after being passed by the Norwegian Parliament] on 25 June 1952, [the Statute having already been passed by the Swedish and Danish Parliaments]. The Icelandic Parliament passed the Statute into law on 10 December 1952 and Finland adhered to it as from 28 October 1958.
