The application of antenna theory to the calculation of electric shielding due to metallic reinforcement in a cylindrical shelter

L. Lewin

Reinforcement bars arranged longitudinally around an antinuclear cylindrical shelter are treated as coupled dipole antennas and are shown to provide shielding against EMP which is a maximum at the shelter center and drops steeply towards the ends unless the reinforcement is continued into the end caps. Depending on dimensions, a low frequency electric field parallel to the cylindrical axis can be shielded by a factor of the order of 10 to 35 dB or more.

A method for the calculation of properties of wire antennas

L. Lewin

A symmetrically-fed dipole antenna is considered in the paper. The rigorous integral equation is usually resolved by approximating the kernel, assuming a deltafunction feed, and iterating. To obtain consistent solutions, the sinusoidal current approximation needs to be modified («rounded») at the feed. A modified transmission line approach is equivalent to firstorder iteration by taking a certain value of characteristic impedance. The radiation impedance for a dipole contains the expression for the line reactance within it, and if this term is separated out, the remainder remains finite as the wire radius approaches zero. The iteration approach is equivalent to the usual induced EMF method result if a certain current amplitude is selected, but the result is unsuitable for the full wave dipole. An improved choice is indicated, and is suitable for any dipole length.

Millimeter Wave Fabry-Perot Interferometer For The Measurement Of The Conductivity Of Thin Films For Solar Cells

Donald S. Gage; L. Lewin; Frank S. Barnes

The conductivity of a thin film on a metal plate can be calculated from measurements of the Q of the cavity of a Fabry-Perot interferometer and the thin film if the cavity without the film has been previously measured. The theory for the conductivity which shows a cubic dependence on the thickness of the film has been developed. The measurement system at 93 gigahertz is described. Experimental results are presented.
