Nuclear Spin Polarimeter via the Lamb-Shift

A nuclear spin polarimeter operating at ion energies in the keV region is described. The principle is based on the relation between the populations of the hyperfine substate of the 2S1/2 metastable state and the spin polarization of the nuclei, protons or deuterons, of these metastable atoms.
